Improving Completion Rates
  • At OKM, we wanted to try and make a cultural
    shift within our school community.
  • We believed that success for ALL students was
possible through a collaborative process where
teachers, support staff and parents worked
together to hold students accountable for their
    learning.

3
Discussion Question
  • 1. Do we as a learning community believe that
  • ALL students can be successful ?
  • 2. Can we achieve a 100 School Completion
  • target ?

4
The Question
  • We asked ourselves what would happen if we
    expected
  • ALL students to perform at a level needed to be
successful if we did NOT accept that some
    students would fail.

5
How do we ensure that ALL students learn?
6
  • At OKM, we started to work on
  • consistent and effective school wide system of
    intervention/prevention for
  • under-supported students
  • a Pyramid of Intervention

7
Pyramid of Intervention
  • At OKM, we are continuing to work on a model of
prevention and progressive intervention for At
    Risk/Under-supported students

8
Intervention Systems
  • 3. Discuss what current intervention systems you
currently have in place for at risk students.
  • Could be at the classroom, department, school
    and/or district level.

9
  • In our model, the Intervention supports become
more intensive as you move up the pyramid
  • The last intervention is designed for the most
    At Risk learners

Our ModelThe Academic Intervention Program
12
  • Over the last couple of years we have discovered
that our interventions needed to be
  • TIMELY We quickly identify students who are
struggling by canvassing teachers at regular
    intervals (every 3 weeks)
  • BASED ON ACCOUNTABILITY A plan that holds
students accountable for learning by requiring
them to access help as soon as they experience
    difficulty

13
Discoveries Cont
  • MANDATORY Students are directed by teachers to
SBRT and, if necessary, by administration
  • ADDITIONAL TIME Some students need additional
time to meet curricular outcomes. Therefore, our
    program takes place after school.

14
