It is the best place, it is the worst place it is
the place of youth, it is the place of the numb
it is the place of progress, it is the place of
stagnation it is the heaven, it is the hell it is
the spring of hope, it is the winter of
despair. It is the place where I spend my
formative years, where I thrive and suffer, where
I love and hate. In the past 4 years, I have
written my stories in this place, but now and
then, I think I've left only blanks. It is the
district that has the corniest name in the
city8212Shaingba, which can be literally
translated into 8220sany flatland.8221But it is
the best name for this district, as never in my
life have I seen a place cornier than this it is
a place that seems too old to progress, a place
where the train station8212altough ugly, but
already the most fashionable building in the
place8212wasbuilt near the oldest communities,
where you can see the old feeds chickens in their
yard, grows crops in the garden, and sometimes
gathers around, sitting on their self-made wooden
chairs, reading newspapers and discussing
politics. Yet, it is a place crowded with
youngsters in fact, with many famous middle
schools and the best university in the city
settling here, Shapingba is deemed
the 8220eduation center8221of the city. But the
youngsters are old, lethargic, depressed, whose
lives are routines. We students fail to make this
place younger. A pity. We stay here, but we don't
remain we dress fashionably, but only when we go
to other places in the city we listen to the
latest musics, but in only our earphones. It is a
stifling place. If it were not for photography, I
would have drowned in this place, living like an
old man. But I haven't. Photography has made me
connect to the communities, however old they are
and however they don't suit the young. These
connections have made me sentimentally rooted in
Shapingba. I have become comfortable indulging my
teenage nuisances in its paradoxical charm.
Gradually, I find the old men friendly and their
chickens cute I find the old-fashioned music they
play slows me down, both my hurried steps and my
impatient mind. I find this corny district
interesting and myself engaged in the world
around me. It is a wonderful place. It is also
because of photography that I discovered a lovely
abandoned wharf called Zhongdukou Wharf. It is
situated under a bridge where, in fact, I usually
passed by but hardly noticed until one day I
happened to find a slope to get down to the wharf
and immediately fell in love with
it.8220Livly8221is the most proper word to
describe this place. The 1.5 kilometer long wharf
is a stage of walks of all kind it carries the
childhood of children who spend their summer
playing water accordingly, it is where parents
enjoy their children's most adorable aspects. It
is the place where people jog after work, where
couples date, where friends drink , sad men
scream and where old men sitting all day long
fishing and chatting about family matters8212the
talk about good things their son finally get
married, the birth of their grandchildren, or
that their granddaughter just get into the
