Maramures is one the best kept Europe's secrets,
the place where the time hasn't moved for
decades, a place where the traditions, the wooden
art and the human kindness are well preserved. On
this small surface are preserved over 100 wooden
churches (8 of them listed on UNESCO list), a
natural reserve also protected by UNESCO În
patrimoniului mondial UNESCO. Una dintre cele opt
este biserica de lemn din Surdesti

Surdesti

Urmeaza o
serbare câmpeneasca. The ancient fertility
tradition of Udatoriu from the village of
Surdesti is one of the most original labour
traditions all over the world. It is happened
here in the second day of Easter every year.

On the occasion of religious feasts and great
fairs, each Morosan, without exception, owns a
traditional costume. Not only old people dress in
traditional clothes but also coconii (preschool
children), which explains the continued use of
the costume.

Maramures is considered one of Europe best
preserved zones from the perspective of cultural
anthropology and ethnography. Old traditions have
remained alive due to the high mountains
shel-tering the long depression from all
sides. Morosenii, as the people of Maramures call
themselves, are a hospitable people who like
company and talking. The old habit of greeting
everyone, originating from the times when people
of the same community were few and the strangers
even fewer, continues today when two people meet
they greet each other, be they acquaintances or
complete strangers.
