Pele? Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle in the
Carpathian Mountains, near Sinaia, in Romania.
This castle was used as a summer residence by the
kings of Romania, built at the wish of the first
Romanian king, Carol I (1866-1914). The
castle was a museum from its first years, opened
when the royal family did not use it, the tickets
sold financing Queens Elisabeta charity works.
After the castle was confiscated by the communist
regime, most of the art collections were
transferred to various art museums.
3Eu, Carol, si al meu popor, Zidit-am, întrun
gând si dor, In timp de lupte-al meu regat, In
timp de pace-al meu palat.
V. Alecsandri
Eu, Carol I, Domn si Rege, Cu Elisaveta Regina,

collections, the number of art objects being
estimated at 60,000. Given his military
background, the King had also a solid knowledge
and interest in weapons. His collection from the
Weapons Room has over 4,000 pieces, including a

41In this semipostal stamp the queen is depicted
nursing a wounded soldier. At the foot of the
vignette is an irregular oval containing a
sentence in Elizabeths handwriting, with her
signature. The sentence for this set translates
as The wounds dressed and the tears wiped away
42This "sacred benefactor", as George Enescu
described her, founded hospitals during the war
and orphanages during times of peace. Moreover,
Princess Elizabeth became actively involved in
the War of lndependence, founding a hospital in
Cotroceni, where she cared for the wounded. She
therefore became known as "Mother to the Sick"
and was eternalised as such in the works of many
artists, including Carol Storck's sculpture
Elizabeth Caring for a Wounded Solider, which
also features in the exhibition at the Pele?
National Museum.
