65The monastery "The Ascension of the Holy
Cross" (with patronage on September 14) is a
relatively new construction being started in 1992
at the initiative of HH Coman, the then Orthodox
bishop of Oradea. It was originally brought -
saved from destruction - a wooden church from the
village of Corbesti. In 1994, started the
foundation of the great church - dedicated to the
"Assumption of the Virgin" - made as a
Moldavian-Walachian synthesis, receiving a large
exterior painting. The fresco is the work of
painter Ioan Savu from Pitesti, and begins in
1998. The interior was painted between 1998-2000
and the exterior between 2001-03. Besides the two
churches mentioned, the monastery also includes a
stronghold, a winter chapel, vast cellars, a huge
bell tower with an entrance gang, a holly water
building, a special summer shrine - specific
emblem of Transylvanian Orthodoxy - and a huge
courtyard, in terraces, transformed into a
welcoming flower garden. Obviously, the monastery
also has many annexes buildings, where religious
paintings, ?embroidery and religious clothing
workshops are most famous, as well as areas where
plant cultivation and animal husbandry are
practiced. The oldest building of the ensemble
hosts a library and a museum. The wooden church
"Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel" and "Saint
Parascheva" is the oldest and most interesting
building of the monastery. It was brought from
the village of Corbesti, and has the
particularity of being the only Transylvanian
wood church with traces of exterior painting. It
is dated as of the 17th century. It was rescued
after being hit by a tornado-shaped storm in 1990
and was partially damaged, hence remaining after
that sad event in a semi-ruin stage. It is a
historic monument. Although located on the
outskirts of Oradea, it is worth the effort of a
visit, in any case useful to the
soul. (https//www.flickr.com/photos/gogulescu_sil
