Symptoms of a Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injury
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is one of
the key ligaments in your knee that helps keep it
stable. It plays a crucial role in stabilising
the knee joint. Connecting the femur to the
tibia, it prevents the tibia from moving backward
on the femur. Although PCL injuries are less
common than other knee ligament injuries, they
can occur due to significant force, such as a
direct blow to the knee or a dashboard injury
during a car accident. Athletes are also at risk
when falling onto a bent knee.
PCL injuries often result in pain, swelling, and
a sense of instability in the knee. A person may
experience difficulty walking and may limp. In
some cases, the knee may feel as though it could
give way. An MRI scan is crucial to assess the
extent of the damage and to check for other
injuries within the knee. Stress X-rays may be
used to measure the tibia's movement relative to
the femur.

Treatment for a PCL injury largely depends on the
severity
  • Grade 1 sprain- Mild stretching, treated
non-surgically with a brace and quadriceps
    strengthening.
  • Grade 2 sprain- Moderate damage, managed with a br
ace and rehab. Surgery may be considered if
    non-surgical treatment fails.
  • Grade 3 tear- Complete tear, requiring surgical re
construction using a graft and post-surgery
    bracing.
  • PCL injuries are often manageable with the right
approach, and surgery may be considered for
severe cases. Treatment is tailored based on
injury severity and functional needs. Scheduling
a consultation with us will help determine the
best approach. Find out more on our website
