8. Use steps and handholds when mounting and
dismounting tractor or for servicing com- ponents
too high to reach from the ground.
National Safety Council statistics tell us that
many people die or suffer serious injury
needlessly each year as a result of farm ac-
cidents.
9. Fasten seatbelt before starting engine.
Don't become a statistic or a victlm.
Carefully review the pro- cedures given in
this manual with all operators ANNUAL- LY. It Is
important that all operators be familiar with,
AND FOLLOW, 9afety precau- tions.
10. Safety devices are intended to protect
operators of Versatile equipment from injury or
death. Under no circumstances should they be
disabled or removed.
Operating Instructions muet be given to everyone
using the tractor before operation and at least
once yearly thereafter in compliance with OSHA
Regulation 1928.57.
11. To provide a better view, certain photos and
illustrations show a safety shield removed. It is
important that a machine never be operated
In this way. Keep all shields in place.
GENERAL SAFETY
OPERATING SAFETY
1.
Never allow an unauthorized driver to operate
tractor.
1. Always operate tractor from the operator's
seat.
2. Keep a fire extinguisher in the cab. Maintain
it and be familiar with its use.
2. Lock seat in position before operating
tractor.
3.
Never carry passengers.
3. Always start tractor with range select and
gearshift levers in neutral. This is particularly
important dur- ing cold weather opera- tion.
4.
Never operate machine in a closed building.
5. Always keep sleeves, jackets or other
clothing relatively tlght and belted, since loose
clothes might catch In moving parts.
4. Always wait until all warning lights and
buzzer go out before putting tractor into gear.
6. Provide a first aid kit for use in case of
accident.
5. Never oil, grease or adjust tractor while it
is moving. Do not leave englne running while
tractor or drawn equipment is being ad- justed,
repaired or cleaned.
6. Ensure parkbrake is set when tractor is
stopped. Tractor can freewheel even when in gear.
7. Never jump from tractor. There is a danger of
catching clothing on protruding parts.

li
tractor fuel. Vaporized diesel fuel is as
dangerous as gasoline. Do not overfill.
SAFE OPERATION IN ROUGH TERRAIN
1. Drive tractor slowly on hillsides and
curves to eliminate the danger of tipping.
Avoid slopes which are too steep for safe
operation.
5. Do not smoke and avoid open flames when
filling batteries.
6. Ether Starting fluid is highly flammable. Do
not use near fire, sparks, open flames or while
engine is running.
2. Always drive slowly over rough ground. Drive
at speeds slow enough to ensure your safety.
7. Remove mud, crop residue, chains and tools
from steps and operator's platform. They may
interfere with pedal operation or entry/exit
from tractor.
3. Avoid sharp turns on hillsides.
4. When driving out of a ditch, gully or up
t steep hillside, engage the clutch slowly.
8. Turn lever OFF at hydraulic couplers to pre-
vent flow to implements when servicing.

plode.
tions. MAINTENANCE SAFETY
1. Escaping hydraulic oil under pressure can
penetrate the skin caus- ing personal injury.
En- sure connections are tight and lines and
hoses are un d amaged. Before disconnecting
hydraulic lines, relieve all pressure. Do not
overfill tank.
IMPLEMENT SAFETY
1. Always hitch loads to drawbar or hitch
points.
2. When hitching drawn equipment to drawbar,
back tractor past clevis then move forward so
that in making the connection, tractor is moving
away from equipment.
2
Safety
11
3. Always lower implements to the ground when
not in use and turn OFF lever couplers. Hydraulic
pressure can rupture hoses, releasing high
pressure oil causing imple- ment damage.
CHEMICAL SAFETY
1. The cab air filters are not designed to
filter harmful chemicals. When using agricultural
chemicals, follow the manufacturer's in-
structions carefully.
4. Be careful when turning with a towed imple-
ment. Lift it from the ground during turns. Side
thrust could damage tires or im- plements.
2. Do not carry harmful chemicals in the
cab. Chemicals may rupture the container and
the fumes may poi9on the operator.
5. Use transport locks, lower implement to
ground and securely block frame before ser-
vicing implement.
3. Wear OSHA approved respiratory protection when
working near toxic chemicals. Main- tain
equipment regularly.
SAFE HIGHWAY OPERATION
1. Equip towed implements with slow moving
vehicle (SMV) signs when travell- ing on public
roads.
ARTICULATION LOCK
1. Use articulation lock during stationary ap-
plications, servicing, jacking or overhaul
operations. Do not use when tractor is mov- ing.
2. Install additional lights on implement rear
to safeguard against rear end collisions.
Daybreak and dusk are particularly dangerous.
VERSATILE tractors have seven pin connectors to
facilitate installation of ex- tra lighting.
2. Before engaging lock, drive tractor to a
level surface, put steering straight, engage
parkbrake, put gearshift in neutral and stop
engine. Remove pin from storage position and put
through hole on rear of front frame. Insert pin
and secure with klik pin. It may be necessary to
start engine and articulate frame sllghtly to
ensure lockpin is through.
3. Be aware of transport width of towed im-
plements. Install additional lights to left side
of wide implements to alert passing traffic. Keep
clear of the approaching lane.
  1. Use hazard warning flashers when transpor- ting
or driving tractor on public roads unless
prohibited by law in your area. Check with
    local authorities.
  2. Keep to the right and yield the right-of-way
especially when pulling implements. Pull off
road and stop to allow motorists to pass. Drive
on road shoulder, if permitted by law.
  3. Use extreme caution when pulling heavy loads at
road speeds. Avoid hard application of tractor
    brakes at high speeds.

7. Ensure headlights are adjusted so they will
not blind operators of oncoming vehicles.

has been run on a dynamometer before in-
stallation but not enough to be considered broken
in.
BEFORE STARTING ENGINE EN SURE ALL OPERATING
CON TROLS ARE IN NEUTRAL AND PARKBRAKE ENGAGED.
1. Do not operate engine at more than 3/4 throt-
tle for the first 24 hours of operation. Full
throttle should only be held for short inter-
vals during the next 24 hours of operation.
OPERATE ALL CONTROLS ONLY FROM OPERATOR'S SEAT.
2. Check oil level every eight to 10 hours for
the first 100 hours of operation.
STOP ENGINE BEFORE SERVIC- ING TRACTOR.
KEEP ALL SHIELDS IN PLACE.
BREAK-IN PERIOD The first 50 hours of operation
are the most critical for ensuring long and
dependable tractor life. Do the following
USE HANDHOLDS AND STEPS WHEN MOUNTING AND DIS-
MOUNTING TRACTOR.
1. Torque wheel nuts after the first hour of
operation and after the 50 hour break-in period.
USE ARTICULATION LOCK IN
STATIONARY APPLICATIONS
AND SERVICING. DO NOT USE WHEN TRACTOR IS MOVING.
2. Change differential and planetary gear oil
and transmission oil and filter after the first
30 hours of operation.

CLUTCH OPERATION
The clutch safety switch permits engine starting
only when clutch pedal is depressed. Sudden
movement caused by transmission in gear when
engine cranks is prevented.
Engage clutch at engine speeds between 1 000 and
1 700 r/min. After tractor and/or load is
started, increase engine speed to desired r/min.
There is an optional clutch decelerator available
which automatically decreases engine r/min to 1
700 r/min when depressed. Do not use clutch as
vehicle decelerator. Avoid overloading clutch to
prevent slippage and tractor damage.
  • ENGINE STARTING
  • Fasten seat belt and set parkbrake.
  • Put throttle lever into low (idle) position.

NOTE
SHIFTING GEARS
Depress clutch pedal when star- ting tractor

lever into neutral.
All gears in the transmission are constantly in
mesh. When a gear is selected, shifting collars
splined to the shafts, not gears, are being
engag- ed. For these collars to mesh, it is
necessary at times for the transmission to be
rotated by turn- ing the steering wheel left or
right and slightly releasing the clutch pedal
from the floor.
  • Do the following when shifting gears
  • Stop tractor.
  • Reduce engine speed to 1 000 r/min.

4. Depress clutch pedal and put gearshift lever

ERROR CODES
AUTOMATIC RANGE SELECT
Error codes listed below indicate a possible
system malfunction. The digital range display
will indicate the error code alternately with the
range indication. If the error code cannot be
cleared using the procedure described, shut down
tractor and correct the malfunction. If the code
still not be cleared, contact your Versatile
dealer.
Depressing the clutch pedal while the tractor is
moving causes a clutch neutral condition. This
allows the electronic control to automatically
select a transmission range to match tractor
speed when the clutch pedal is released, as
follows
Range Select Lever in Forward A higher or lower
gear will be selected as tractor speed changes
during the clutchneutral condition.
Flashing "P Indicates that power has been
applied with the range shift lever out of neutral
or upldown shift contact closed. Put lever into
neutral or repair shift contacts to clear code.
Range Select Lever in Reverse A lower gear will
be selected as the tractor slows.
Operation
9
18
- CAUTION
This condition can be caused by an intermittent
open circuit in the power supply to the con-
troller. Check connectors and wires for poor con-
tinuity.
DO NOT OPERATE TRACTOR WITH AN UNCLEARED "H" ER
ROR CODE.
Flashing "C Indicates a malfunction in
detecting vehicle speed. The code indicates that
no speed pulses are being detected which may be
caused by an open circuit, a short circuit or
improperly gapped magnetic speed sensors. When
this code is displayed, the automatic range
select feature is inoperative. If the clutch
pedal is depressed during this code, the range
shift lever will remain in neutral even when
clutch pedal is released. To clear code, repair
the circuits and/or sensors.
B G ALERT
Flashing " Indicates defective transmis-
sion solenoid output circuit, the solenoid may be
open or shorted, or the cable may be defective.
This error causes failure of neutral and may blow
a fuse. Defect must be corrected to use range
select lever. Use come home" manual control when
it appears.
Come Home Manual Control This three- position
manual control is an emergency device permitting
use of neutral, first forward and first reverse.
Stop tractor before shifting.
  • Manual shifts may be achieved without correc-
ting the flashing C as follows
  • Depress clutch pedal.
  • Bring tractor to a stop.

1. Disconnect J1 and J3 labelled connectors from
digital range display and shift control.
3. Move range shift lever into neutral, then to
forward or reverse to select first range.
2. Connect J1 and J3 connectors to similarly
labelled connectors on manual control unit.
4. Release clutch pedal slowly to achieve a
smooth start.
3. Operate manual control by moving switch from
neutral (center position) to FORWARD or REVERSE.
5. Upshift normally. See Transmission Opera-
tion, this section.
4. Release clutch pedal slowly to achieve a
smooth start.
Flashing "H Indicates that functioning of
master clutch pedal switches should be checked by
cycling the pedal. If both pressure switches are
functioning, the code will clear. If the code
does not clear, the clutch disconnect function
will be unreliable. Possible causes are as
follows 1. Improper clutch pedal adjustment
