Sensory Integration
Sensory processing or sensory integration refers
to how our body receives, understands, and uses
information from the senses. One component of
this process is sensory integration, which
includes interpretation, coordination, and
organization of sensation. Efficient sensory
integration enables us to plan appropriate action
and behavior and learn new skills.

• Sensory Modulation Refers to the nature and
  intensity of our reactions to sensation.

• Sensory Discrimination Sensory discrimination
  is the ability of the nervous system to identify
  the type and quality of sensory input, such as
  the size and shape of an object, the direction of
  a noise, and the position of our body as we move
  through space, and then interpret this
  information for the development of motor skills.

SELF REGULATION
Self-regulation is our bodies ability to attain,
maintain, and change arousal appropriately for a
task or situation. (Williams Shellenberger,
1994, p 1-5) It is our ability to manage your own
energy states, emotions, behaviors, and
attention, in ways that are socially acceptable
and help achieve positive goals such as
maintaining good relationships learning and
maintaining wellbeing.

Handwriting
Occupational Therapy for Handwriting refers to
the mechanical parts of the actual act of forming
letters, numbers, strokes, lines or
simple/complex figures to demonstrate graphomotor
skills. Below outlines the mechanical aspects of
handwriting.

• Memory Remembering and writing dictated letters
• Orientation Orienting or facing letters in the
  correct direction.
• Placement placement refers to a childs ability
  to place their letters, numbers, words or
  sentence on a baseline or whether they float
  his/her letters and numbers well above the bolded
  1/8 or 1/16 of an inch margin of error depending
  on their respective age or grade expectations.
• Size A sizing error occurs when a letter or
  number is formed larger than the margin of error,
  which is 1 grade level below the current.

Fine Gross Motor
Gross Motor or Bilateral Motor Coordination
Skill Gross motor skills involve the large
muscles of the body that assist with sitting
upright, walking, kicking, running, and jumping.
Gross motor skills are dependent on muscle tone
and muscle strength. Gross motor skills include

• Posture
• Locomotion
• Balance
• Coordination
• Strength
• Endurance
• Body awareness

Fine Motor Skills Fine motor skills are the
small movements that occur in the hands, wrists,
and fingers. These small movements work in
conjunction with the eyes. Fine motor skills
involve the following

• Dexterity Quality or ability of movement.
• Eye-hand coordination The coordination between
  hands and eyes to work in conjunction with one
  another.
• In-hand manipulation ability to shift items
  within hands and fingers.
• Grasp and precision patterns Ability to hold or
  manipulate items.
• Bilateral coordination The hands ability to work
  together.
