1
Syphilis Testing in Singapore Importance,
Process, and Options
  • Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection
caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
Testing for syphilis is an important step in
    diagnosing and treating the infection.

2
There are several tests available for syphilis
screening and diagnosis, including 1. Blood
tests The most common method of syphilis testing
is through blood tests. These tests can detect
the presence of antibodies produced by the body
in response to the infection. The two main types
of blood tests for syphilis are 2.
Non-treponemal tests These tests, such as the
Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) and
Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) tests, are initial
screening tests that detect antibodies that are
produced as a result of syphilis infection. If
the results are positive, further confirmatory
testing is required. 3. Treponemal tests These
tests, such as the Treponema pallidum particle
agglutination (TPPA) and fluorescent treponemal
antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) tests, are more
specific and confirmatory for syphilis. They
detect antibodies that specifically target the
bacterium causing syphilis. 4. Rapid
point-of-care tests These tests provide quick
results within minutes, allowing for immediate
diagnosis and treatment. They usually involve a
fingerstick blood sample or oral fluid
collection. However, confirmatory testing with a
laboratory-based test may be necessary if the
rapid test results are positive.
3
It is important to note that a single negative
test does not exclude the possibility of syphilis
infection, especially during the early stages.
Repeat Syphilis Testing in Singapore may be
necessary, particularly if there is a high
suspicion of infection or if there has been
recent exposure to the disease.
4
If you suspect you have been exposed to syphilis
or are experiencing symptoms, it is recommended
to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider
can perform the necessary testing and provide
appropriate treatment options if needed.
