About This Presentation
Title:

Liquid-filled hard capsules versus soft gelatin capsules (1)

Description:

Soft gelatin (softgel) capsules have long been the preferred dosage form for filling liquid, semisolid and poorly soluble ingredients in liquid vehicles in the nutraceutical industry. Softgel capsules however have their own set of shortcomings most of which can be resolved or mitigated to a great extent by liquid-filled hard capsules (LFHCs) – a new age and advanced dosage form. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

1
Liquid-?lled hard capsules versus soft gelatin
capsules
2
Introduction
Liquid-?lled hard capsules and soft gelatin
capsules are two delivery methods for
pharmaceutical products. Both have their
advantages and disadvantages. This presentation
will compare and contrast these two types of
capsules.
3
Manufacturing
Liquid-?lled hard capsules are made by ?lling a
hard gelatin shell with liquid. Soft gelatin
capsules are made by mixing the active
ingredient with gelatin and other ingredients to
create a semi-solid matrix. The matrix is then
formed into individual capsules.
4
Dosage Form
Liquid-?lled hard capsules can be used to
deliver liquid, semi-solid, or suspension
formulations. Soft gelatin capsules are limited
to delivering liquid or semi-solid
formulations. Liquid-?lled hard capsules may have
a slower dissolution time compared to soft
gelatin capsules.
5
Stability
Soft gelatin capsules have a better stability
pro?le compared to liquid-?lled hard capsules.
This is because the semi-solid matrix in soft
gelatin capsules provides a barrier to moisture
and oxygen. Liquid- ?lled hard capsules are more
susceptible to degradation due to moisture and
oxygen exposure.
6
Packaging
Soft gelatin capsules are more ?exible in terms
of packaging options. They can be packed in
blister packs or bottles. Liquid-?lled hard
capsules are typically packed in bottles. Soft
gelatin capsules can also have a longer shelf
life compared to liquid-?lled hard capsules.
7
Conclusion
Both liquid-?lled hard capsules and soft gelatin
capsules have their advantages and
disadvantages. When choosing between the two, it
is important to consider the speci?c drug and its
characteristics. Factors such as stability,
dosage form, and packaging should also be taken
into account.
