Do you feel that your child's needs are not being
met at school?
As a parent, you might be interested in learning
more about special education law and how it
relates to your child. It can be challenging to
navigate the special education world. In order to
better work with schools to meet each student's
needs, I can assist families in understanding
their rights and the special education evaluation
process.?

A student must fulfill specific requirements
outlined by federal and state laws and
regulations in order to qualify. Special
education or school-based services are not always
guaranteed in the presence of a medical
diagnosis. Please check the Colorado Department
of Education's Special Education Office for more
details here.

Parental advocacy for their children's needs
in the educational system is made easier with the
help of a special education consultant. I focus
on helping kids and teenagers, especially those
who struggle with emotional and learning
disorders, ADHD, ASD, and other conditions.
Children who are neurodiverse face particular
difficulties that are frequently overlooked or
misunderstood by educators, healthcare
professionals (including mental health
professionals), friends, and family. Its no
wonder that they have trouble getting the
supports they need within the school system.

Autism Counseling
Your teen has been diagnosed on the Autism
Spectrum and you have a unique parenting journey
to navigate. Is it difficult for your teen to
understand or make friends? If he pulls away from
you in the face of social situations, or if he
doesnt seem to be gaining independence as
quickly as other teens, then these are issues
that counseling can support. Counseling for teens
who are on the Autism Spectrum can be a bit
different than counseling for neurotypical teens.

ADHD Counseling
By the time kids with ADHD reach their teen
years, they have often had years of not feeling
good enough. They may own labels like lazy.
Sometimes they have anxiety as well. Anxiety and
ADHD are a combination many people experience.
They get anxious because they are worried they
will miss a deadline or because they forgot where
they put something or they werent paying
attention during the directionsagain.

Anxiety and Depression Counseling
Anxiety in teenagers takes so many forms
outbursts of stress and frustration, poor sleep,
restlessness/impulsiveness, reliance on
substances like caffeine or drugs to boost
energy, having a harder time concentrating or
sitting still. Some kids have trouble sleeping,
some struggle with social interactions, while
others worry about things they cant control.
According to the National Institute of Mental
Health, 31.9 of teens 13-19 struggled with a
diagnosable anxiety disorder over this last year.

What if my teenager does not want to come to
therapy?
Many teens think of counseling as punishment or
may even feel uncomfortable with the idea of
therapy.I offer a free 20 minute in-office
consultation for your child to try out my
counseling office. This helps them feel
comfortable and able to express concerns about
therapy, as well as gives them a chance to ask
questions about me and get a sense what our
sessions might be like.

Depending on the issue you are seeking help for,
therapy sessions could last anywhere from 6 weeks
to 6 months for relatively simple problems. You
might need to invest more time in therapyup to a
year or longerif your issues are complicated or
have persisted for a long time. Your motivation
is a significant factor that may affect the
