3What is Liver Cancer Types Stages Liver
cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells in
the liver grow and multiply uncontrollably,
eventually forming a tumor. The liver is a vital
organ that plays a crucial role in many important
bodily functions, such as filtering toxins from
the blood, producing bile, and regulating
metabolism. When cancer develops in the liver, it
can interfere with these functions and
potentially spread to other parts of the
body. There are two main types HepatoCellular
Carcinoma (HCC) This is by far the most common
type of primary liver cancer. HCC is usually
found in people who have chronic hepatitis B or C
infection or cirrhosis. People with these
conditions have a higher risk for HCC because
they have damaged liver cells. Liver cells that
are damaged are more likely to become
cancerous. Cholangio Carcinoma
Cholangiocarcinoma, on the other hand, starts in
the bile ducts, which are tubes that carry bile
from the liver to the small intestine.
Cholangiocarcinoma can be either intrahepatic
(within the liver) or extrahepatic (outside of
the liver but still affecting bile ducts).
Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas make up a small
minority of cases while extrahepatic
cholangiocarcinomas are more common. Now, let's
talk about the stages of liver cancer.
4- Stages of Liver Cancer
- Like many other types of cancer, liver cancer is
staged from 1 to 4. Stage 1 means the cancer is
confined to the liver, while stage 4 means the
cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
Here's a breakdown of the different stages - Stage 1 The cancer is small and has not spread
beyond the liver. - Stage 2 The cancer is either larger than in
stage 1 or has spread to nearby lymph nodes. - Stage 3 The cancer has spread to major blood
vessels or other organs near the liver. - Stage 4 The cancer has spread to distant parts
of the body, such as the lungs or bones. - It's worth noting that within each stage, there
can be sub-stages that further describe the
cancer's severity. For example, stage 3 can be
broken down into 3A and 3B, depending on how far
the cancer has spread. Understanding the
different types and stages of liver cancer is
important because it can help guide liver cancer
treatment decisions. For example, early-stage
liver cancer may be treated with surgery to
remove the tumor, while more advanced cancer may
require a combination of treatments like
chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapy.
