Title: Rebuilding Your Ankle Foundation: Advanced Surgery for Ankle Cartilage Repair

1
Rebuilding Your Ankle Foundation Advanced
Surgery for Ankle Cartilage Repair
  • Ankle cartilage refers to the smooth, white
tissue that covers the ends of the bones in the
ankle joint. Cartilage serves as a cushion
between bones, allowing them to move smoothly
against each other during joint movement. The
ankle joint is made up of three bones the tibia
(shinbone), the fibula (a smaller bone in the
lower leg), and the talus (a bone in the foot).

2
The cartilage in the ankle joint can become
damaged due to injury, wear, and tear, or
degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis.
Symptoms of ankle cartilage damage may include
pain, stiffness, swelling, and limited range of
motion in the ankle joint.
Ankle cartilage surgery is a surgical procedure
that is done to repair or replace damaged or
injured cartilage in the ankle joint. Cartilage
is the smooth tissue that covers the ends of
bones in joints, providing a smooth surface for
the bones to glide over each other during
movement.
3
In ankle cartilage surgery, the damaged cartilage
may be repaired through techniques such as
microfracture, drilling, or abrasion
arthroplasty. These techniques involve creating
small holes in the damaged cartilage to stimulate
the growth of new cartilage. If the damage to
the cartilage is more severe, a cartilage
transplant or graft may be necessary. In this
procedure, healthy cartilage is taken from
another part of the patient's body and
transplanted into the ankle joint. Ankle
cartilage surgery may be recommended for people
who have sustained an ankle injury, such as a
fracture or sprain, or for those with chronic
ankle pain and inflammation due to conditions
such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
The goal of the surgery is to reduce pain and
improve joint function, allowing patients to
return to their daily activities.
