What Exactly Is The WELL Building Standard?
The WELL building standard is a performance-based
system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring
built-environment features that impact human
health and wellbeing. It is the worlds first
building standard focused solely on the health
and wellbeing of the occupants, managed by the
IWBI (International WELL Building Institute).
WELL employs medical and related data to
investigate the relationship between buildings
and the people who work, learn, or otherwise use
them. The WELL building standard arose from
another certification system known as LEED, or
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
LEED is primarily concerned with promoting
sustainable building practises by responsibly
sourcing healthy materials. This standard
assesses how green, sustainable, and healthy a
building is. It provides a framework for
buildings to implement measures such as energy
savings, water efficiency, and CO2 emissions
reduction. In this manner, a building can
effectively work and change in order to
obtain LEED certification. The LEED standard is a

buildings, the WELL building standard goes a
step further by focusing on the health and

structures. WELL takes over where LEED leaves
off. According to PCMA, WELL is focused
exclusively on people and, specifically, the ways

our comfort, drive better choices, and generally
enhance, not compromise, our health and wellness.

WELL Certification is based on performance and
requires a passing score in each of the WELL
Building Standards seven categories.

How Long Does It Take to Obtain Certification?
LEED Certification is implemented by the U.S.
Green Building Council (USGBC). There are three
levels of WELL certification Silver, Gold, and
