Does your house have short, wide windows? Perhaps
they look odd in your existing home decor. An
easy way to transform the entire space is by
adding appropriate window treatments. As they are
different from standard-size windows, you will
need to carefully choose the right ones. Keep

1. Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains
To conceal the disproportionate look of these
windows, consider floor-to-ceiling curtains. When
installing them, curtain rods are placed close to
the ceiling as the curtains hang softly brushing
the floor or puddling on it. This creates an
illusion of taller windows and instantly
eliminates their disproportionate look. They also
make the room appear larger and more elegant.

2. Cafe Curtains
If your kitchen is styled traditionally, consider
using cafe curtains to cover them. They perfectly
blend with your existing decor, and their folds
add a classic and elegant touch. The best way to
install cafe curtains is to keep the upper half
of your windows exposed while hanging them in the
lower half. In this way, you enjoy privacy and
allow sufficient light to enter.

3. Sheer Curtains
Short, wide windows let much less light enter the
room than tall ones. As a result, your room may
appear dark, even during the day, especially when
you install a thick window covering. Keeping them
open all the time however will compromise your
privacy. To avoid this, you may want to turn on
your lights, but doing so will increase your
electricity bills. So, the best solution is to
install sheer curtains. Their thin fabric allows
sufficient light to pour into the room while
providing privacy.

4. Wooden Blinds
Wooden blinds are an excellent option for
oddly-sized windows. They are semi-translucent
and offer enough light and privacy while being a
style statement. If you think wooden blinds are
outside your budget, faux wood blinds
installation is a great option. Consider using
blinds that are a little bigger than the original
size of your windows. This will trick your eyes
into believing that your short and wide windows
are actually the size of the blinds. You can also
add a blackout lining for more privacy. For
interior blinds installation, it is best to hire
professionals, especially if you are doing it for
the first time.

5. Valances
If you think hanging curtains will block your
view outside, you can install valances above your
short and wide windows. Pair them with Roman
shades to make them visually appealing while not
compromising the functionality of the window
treatments. Consider mounting the valances a few
inches above the window so that they conceal the
shades when pulled up. This will also make the
windows appear taller.
