SALVATION
KEY TEXT For God so loved the world that he gave
his one and only Son, that whoever believes in
him shall not perish but have eternal life. For
God did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but to save the world through
him. John 316-17
  • BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONAL REFERENCE
  • John 316-21

6
  • A. What is Grace?
  • Grace Gods mercy given to those who dont
deserve it. It is the most amazing God-given gift
to everyone who desires to receive it and its
    priceless.
  •  B. Description of Grace
  • Grace comes from the Greek term CARIS, which
means beauty or attractiveness. Grace originates
within God. He does not see us in our miserable
condition. He always looks upon us favorably.
This produces the miracle of transformation. A
good example for this is the time when God
decided to destroy the earth with a great flood
because of mans wickedness and corrupt ways. The
only thing that preserved mankinds existence was
that ... Noah found favor in the eyes of the
    Lord (Genesis 6 5-8).

7
  • C. Justification by Grace
  • Some people think that in order to yield their
lives to the Lord they must first become better
than what they already are, so they continue on
their futile way, preparing, trying to convince
themselves that, tomorrow I will change. What
is interesting about faith is that the Lord does
not demand anything from us but our belief! Faith
allows us to be able to declare that All the
chastisement that I, a sinner, deserved, fell on
that man Jesus, who had committed no sin and all
the good that Jesus should have received came to
me instead just because I believed in Him, God
looks at me through His Son, Jesus and I
communicate with God through Jesus Christ as
    well.

8
  • D. GRACE AND SIN
  • In Rome, slaves were put up on a platform and
placed against a post that had a spear nailed to
it. This spear protruded over their heads as an
indicator that that particular slave was for
sale. Whoever bought the slave had total rights
over him and the slave had no say at all he
could not chose who would buy him and become
    ruler and master over him.
  • The same thing happened to us because of sin. We
were displayed in Satans market and the spear
over our head was the adversarys accusing
finger. It was necessary for us to be bought by
someone. That is why Jesus purchased us with His
blood when He died on the cross.

9
WHAT IS SALVATION?
  • Salvation is equivalent to rescue.
  • As we use the term salvation, we are saying that
a ransom will be exchanged, in order to set a
person free from enslavement imposed on them by
someone or something it may even be because of a
    system or an oppressive situation.

10
CONCLUSION
  • His saving grace is so precious that God, with
all His power, could not find any other way to
redeem us but through the blessed blood of his
own Son. Through Jesus everything that man lost
in Paradise was restored back to him through
faith. However, no man will be able to enjoy life
and spiritual riches without first admitting his
condition as a sinner, accepting Christs
sacrifice on the cross, and believing in Him.

11
WHO WILL BE SAVED?
12
Acts 412
  • Salvation is found in no one else, for there is
no other name under heaven given to mankind by
    which we must be saved."

13
  • What is Salvation?

14
  • Salvation refers to the act of God's grace in
delivering people from bondage of sin and
condemnation, transferring them to His kingdom ,
    and giving them eternal life.

15
HOW CAN I BE SAVED?
16
John 146
  • Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and
the life. No one comes to the Father except
    through me.

17
WHO WILL BE SAVED?
18
  • Lets do an EXERCISE!

19
Gearing Up
  • You are travelling for vacation with your friends
(which is your group members now) to the famous
beach resort in the country - Boracay, through a
luxury ship from Batangas port. While enjoying
your voyage you were disturbed by the rushing
waves continuously striking the ship due to
strong typhoon you are unaware of and caught you
unprepared, thus makes your boat slowly sinking
at the ocean. And there's no other way but to
abandon the ship using the life boats for you to
    be saved.
  • Unfortunately, there's only one (1) available
life boat for you which can only carry no more
than four (4) persons or else it will sink.
Meaning to say that there will be 4 persons among
you that will be saved and some of you will
suffer and sacrifice themselves for others to
    live.

20
Please follow
  • Decide among yourselves who will be saved and who
will sacrifice to die for others to live by
    answering this question
  • What is your purpose in life and why do you think
    you deserved to be saved?
  • Then according to a good purpose based on
everyones answer, you are to choose who will be
    saved
  • 1. Choose and list all your names in the table.
Then Identify the persons you want to save
according to his/her good reasons, importance and
values in this life by putting number
chronologically (or by priority like, 1, 2, 3
etc.) on the other column across each name.
  • 2. Transfer and summarize all the votes on the
given table. The persons who will get the highest
votes from the group will be saved and the
persons who will get the least votes will
sacrifice their lives for others to live.

Explore for Discussion
  • 1. What is your feelings that your friends have
chosen you to be saved from a sure physical
    death? Explain?
  • 2. What is your reaction knowing that your
friends did not choose you and now you're left
behind to suffer a death penalty of drowning into
    the deep water? Explain?
  • 3. Does it okay for you to suffer death? Would
you like to be saved by Jesus Christ? Why do you
think Jesus will save you from eternal punishment
of death brought by your sins? Explain?

23
The Twelve Articles of Faith
24
The Creed, also known as the Twelve Articles of
Faith, expresses essential biblical doctrines
that have been articulated, defended, and
embraced for nearly two thousand years of church
history. Many evangelical Christians throughout
history have used the Apostles Creed as a
personal proclamation of their own faith.
Further, all evangelical denominations since the
Protestant Reformation have affirmed the
Apostles Creed without reservation.
25

  • The Life Everlasting (1 Cor. 29).

27
The Apostles Creed is profound for its pure
simplicity and its concise coverage of the major
topics of Christian teaching. The Apostles
Creed is the faith that all professing Christians
should know, what all pastors and priests should
teach, and what all bishops and theologians
should defend. Michael Bird
28
Articles of Faith divided into three parts
  • God the Father and our creation
  • God the Son and our deliverance
  • God the Holy Spirit and our
  • sanctification.

29
I BELIEVE IN GOD
30
The Implication
  • The Apostles Creed begins with four little words
that seem so obvious for many religious person
but miss their relevance in daily lives.
  • I believe in God, which in Greek, faith or
trust are the nouns for which believe is the
usual and common verb. That I believe means I
place my faith in or I place my trust in

31
What do you believe when you say, I believe in
God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and
earth?
  • That the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
  • who out of nothing created heaven and earth and
    everything in them,1
  • who still upholds and rules them
  • by his eternal counsel and providence,2
  • is my God and Father
  • because of Christ the Son.3
  • I trust God so much that I do not doubt he will
    provide
  • whatever I need for body and soul,4
  • and will turn to my good whatever adversity he
sends upon me in this sad world.5
  • God is able to do this because he is almighty
God6and desires to do this because he is a
    faithful Father.7
  • 1 Gen. 1-2 Ex. 2011 Ps. 336 Isa. 4424 Acts

32
Of God
  • The word God initially denotes namely, the
sole good which is truly ultimate, that is,
capable of being loved and sought for its own
    sake.

33
Of God the Father
  • Father employs to characterize God as the
ultimate ground of the cosmos, the one from whom
all things, the one who generates all things. (1
    Cor 86)

34
Of God the Father
  • The Father of the cosmos, then, is known first of
all as the Father of that eternal Word in whose
incarnate work the exodus from Egypt is somehow
repeated, renewed, and extended, and therefore as
the source of that Spirit by whose power that One
Son becomes a great blessing to all. (Heb. 210)

35
Of God the Father Almighty
  • Almighty pertains to omnipotence character of
    God.
  • Isaiah 45
kapahamakan. Akong si Yahweh ang nagpapasya ng
    lahat ng ito.

36
Creator of heaven and earth
  • In the beginning, God created the heavens and the
earth. Now the earth was formless and empty,
darkness was over the surface of the deep, and
the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (
    Gen. 11-2, NIV)
  • The first verse of the Bible affirms that God
made all things signified by the words, heaven
and earth. And the second verse clarifies that
the earth God originally made, was formless and
empty which God then shaped into a habitable
world for humanity over the six creation days.

37
Creator of heaven and earth
  • Notice that God created all according to His
will. God was not forced to create by any
pre-existent being. God himself chose to create
the world according to his good pleasure. Against
Gnosticism, the second-century bishop Irenaeus of
Lyons shows that the Bible teaches creation from
    nothing
  • There is one God Almighty, who created all things
through His Word He both prepared and made all
things out of nothing, just as Scripture
says For by the word of the Lord the heavens
were made, and all their host by the breath of
His mouth Ps. 336. And again All things were
made through Him and without Him was made not a
    thing John 13.

38
Creator of heaven and earth
  • Father referred to the one eternal God who was
uncreated (or in the language of the second
    century unbegotten unborn). Almighty because
God has power over all things in the world.
Nothing in Gods world can overpower God. This
means God did was not forced to create the world
but chose to from his good pleasure. Creator
because everything, heaven and earth, was made
by God from nothing. Matter was not eternal.

39
Creator of heaven and earth
  • Theophilus of Antioch summarizes this theology
  • And God is without beginning, because He is
unbegotten unborn or uncreated and He is
unchangeable, because He is immortal. But he
is Lord, because He rules over the
universe Father, because he is before all
things Fashioner and Maker, because He is
creator and maker of the universe the Highest,
because of His being above all and Almighty,
because He Himself rules and embraces all. For
the heights of heaven, and the depths of the
abysses, and the ends of the earth, are in His
hand, and there is no place of His rest.

40
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord
  • The meaning of Christian is to be a follower of
Christ. We believe in Christ as the Son of God.
Without the Son of God, there is no Christianity.
In Christianity, we believe the Son of God was
begotten before eternity. The Son of God is fully
God and fully man and He is our mediator between
    us and God.

41
Of begotten Son
  • And He is the image of the invisible God, the
first-born of all creation. (Col 115 NAS)
  • I came forth from the Father, and have come into
the world I am leaving the world again, and
going to the Father. (John 1628 NAS)
  • We say begotten from the Father which means
    coming forth from, originating, or
generating from the Father. This can be found
in the Westminster Confession of Faith and its
    catechisms. The Larger Catechism says,

42
Of begotten Son
  • The Westminster Larger Catechism Question 10
  • Q. 10. What are the personal properties of the
    three persons in the Godhead?
  • A. It is proper to the Father to beget the Son,
and to the Son to be begotten of the Father, and
to the Holy Ghost to proceed from the Father and
    the Son from all eternity.
  • This simply means that God has an order to His
nature. Not that God has three gods within Him
but, that he is self generating, self sustaining,
and order. In the Orthodox teaching of the
trinity, God is the Mind, the Word, and the
Spirit. We see God as three in His thought, word,
and will. The Word of God is begotten or
generated from the Mind of God.

43
Of Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary
  • The most important part of Christs nature is the
fact that He was conceived by Holy Spirit and
born from a woman. Even more important is the
teaching that He was born from a virgin. The
reason behind this is to teach that Christ is
    mediator between God and man.
  • In order for Christ to be God and Man, He needs
to have the nature of God and the nature of man
    without confusion of both natures.
  • This simply means that there are not chunks of
God mixed with chunks of man. Nor is the Spirit
of Christ God and the rest of Him human.
Christianity teaches that Christ is inseparably
man and God united together as one person in
    Christ.

44
Of Conveived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary
  • Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign
Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a
son, and she will call His name Immanuel. (Isa
    714 NAS)
  • Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and
shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name
Immanuel, which translated means, God with us.
    (Mat 123 NAS)
  • and kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a
Son and he called His name Jesus. (Mat 125 NAS)

45
Of Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary
  • And the angel said to her, Do not be afraid,
Mary for you have found favor with God. And
behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear
a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be
great, and will be called the Son of the Most
High and the Lord God will give Him the throne
of His father David and He will reign over the
house of Jacob forever and His kingdom will have
no end. And Mary said to the angel, How can
this be, since I am a virgin? And the angel
answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will
come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you and for that reason the holy
offspring shall be called the Son of God. (Luke
    130-35 NAS)

46
Of Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary
  • We believe that God became man in order to be
with us, not only to experience the same trouble
we go through physically, but to die for our sins
in our place as a perfect substitute in our
    behalf.
  • We believe Christ is also God so that He can
truly teach us what God has to say, He can
directly represent us in Gods presence, and He
can have the ability in and of Himself to have
power over death. This is possible through Christ
being born of God and not merely of a human. If
Mary was not a virgin, there could be a legal
challenge to the claim that Christs Father is
God. In other words, we know Christs Father is
God because Mary had no physical relationship
    with a man.

47
Of Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary
  • The Westminster Shorter Catechism states this
    well.
  • Q. 22. How did Christ, being the Son of God,
    become man?
  • A. Christ, the Son of God, became man, by taking
to himself a true body, and a reasonable soul,
being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost,
in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and born of her,
    yet without sin.
  • Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 22

48
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was Crucified,
Died and was Buried
  • An essential teaching in Christianity is the
crucifixion and death of Christ. Christians teach
that the death of Christ was for the purpose of
making propitiation for our sin, reconciling us
to God, and paying the price for our sins in our
place. The Westminster Confession of Faith
    states
  • The office of Mediator the Lord Jesus did most
willingly undertake which that he might
discharge, he was made under the law, and did
perfectly fulfill it, was prosecuted by Pontius
    Pilate, endured most grievous torments
immediately in his soul, and most painful
sufferings in his body, was crucified, and died,
was buried, and remained under the power of
    death, yet saw no corruption.
  • Westminster Confession of
Faith VIII. Of Christ the Mediator

49
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was Crucified,
Died and was Buried
  • According to the Bible and historians, there was
a governor of Judea named Pontius Pilate. The
gospel writers wrote that Christ was tried in the
court and convicted by Pilate as a criminal. This
conviction led to Christs execution. The death
penalty in the Roman times was carried out by
crucifixion. While the account that Jesus was
crucified may only be verified by the gospel
writers. It is a historical fact that Pontius
Pilate was the province in Judea and that the
common form of execution was crucifixion. This
can be verified in history books written by Philo
    and Josephus.

50
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was Crucified,
Died and was Buried
  • The apostle John, in his gospel, said,
  • There they crucified Him, and with Him two other
men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
    (John 1918 NAS)
  • Not just Christ was crucified in this manner
but, many people who were convicted were executed
this way. The reason for Christ being prosecuted
by Pontius Pilate was to show that, Christ, who
was innocent of the charges against Him, was
convicted by not only the Jewish community, but
society as a whole. The Heidelberg Catechism puts
    it like this
  • Q. 38. Why did he suffer under Pontius Pilate
    as his judge?
  • A. That he, being innocent, might be condemned by
an earthly judge, and thereby set us free from
the judgment of God which, in all its severity,
    ought to fall upon us.
  • Heidelberg Catechism Question 38

51
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was Crucified,
Died and was Buried
  • The purpose of Christs death was to act as a
substitutionary atonement for our sins. Christ
was innocent and did no wrong. He payed the
penalty required by God in our place.
  • For Christ also died for sins once for all, the
just for the unjust, in order that He might bring
us to God, having been put to death in the flesh,
but made alive in the spirit (1Pe 318 NAS)
  • For I delivered to you as of first importance
what I also received, that Christ died for our
sins according to the Scriptures, (1Co 153 NAS)
  • Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our
sorrows He carried Yet we ourselves esteemed Him
stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. But He
was pierced through for our transgressions, He
was crushed for our iniquities The chastening
for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His
scourging we are healed. (Isa 534-5 NAS)

52
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was Crucified,
Died and was Buried
  • This part is confused by some however, the Bible
is clear. Christ was not buried at all. He was
placed in a tomb. In other words, they did not
dig a hole and throw His body in it and cover Him
    with dirt. The Bible says,
  • and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had
hewn out in the rock and he rolled a large stone
against the entrance of the tomb and went
    away.(Mat 2760 NAS)
  • And when his disciples heard about this, they
came and took away his body and laid it in a
    tomb. (Mar 629 NAS)
  • And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen
cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock,
where no one had ever lain. (Luk 2353 NAS)
  • Therefore on account of the Jewish day of
preparation, because the tomb was nearby, they
laid Jesus there (John 1942 NAS)

53
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was Crucified,
Died and was Buried
  • By buried, the creed is expressing that He was
dead. Dead enough to be placed in a tomb. The
    Heidelberg Catechism states it well.
  • Q. 41. Why was he buried?
  • A. To confirm the fact that he was really dead.
  • Heidelberg Catechism Question 41

54
Why does the creed add, He descended to hell?
  • To assure me during attacks of deepest dread and
    temptationthat Christ my Lord,
  • by suffering unspeakable anguish, pain, and
    terror of soul,
  • on the cross but also earlier,
  • has delivered me from hellish anguish and
    torment.1
  • 1 Isa. 53 Matt. 2636-46 2745-46 Luke
    2244 Heb. 57-10

55
How does Christs resurrection benefit us?
  • First, by his resurrection he has overcome death,
  • so that he might make us share in the
righteousness he obtained for us by his death.1
  • Second, by his power we too are already raised to
    a new life.2
  • Third, Christs resurrection is a sure pledge to
    us of our blessed resurrection.3

  • 2 Rom. 65-11 Eph. 24-6 Col. 31-4
  • 3 Rom. 811 1 Cor. 1512-23 Phil. 320-21

56
What do you mean by saying, He ascended to
heaven?
  • That Christ, while his disciples watched,
  • was taken up from the earth into heaven1and
remains there on our behalf 2 until he comes
    again
  • to judge the living and the dead.3
  • 1 Luke 2450-51 Acts 19-112 Rom. 834 Eph.
    48-10 Heb. 723-25 9243 Acts 111

57
What do you believe concerning the holy
catholic church?
  • I believe that the Son of God
  • through his Spirit and Word,1out of the entire
human race,2from the beginning of the world to
    its end,3
  • gathers, protects, and preserves for himself
  • a community chosen for eternal life4
  • and united in true faith.5
  • And of this community I am6 and always will be7
  • a living member.

of sin The resurrection of the body And life
everlasting, Amen.
60
The origin of the Apostles Creed is to be found
in the form learned by the catechumen in the
course of His preparation of baptism in the early
church. This kind of confession was called
symbolum and was not intended to be a complete
summary of Christian doctrine, but rather a brief
statement about the Trinity and the person and
work of Christ. The New International Dictionary

Tinatakan Niya kami at
pinagkalooban ng Kaniyang Espiritu, bilang
katunayang tutuparin Niya and Kaniyang
pangako. II Corinto 121-22
63
(total depravity of man), at ang dalawang
kalikasan ni Cristo. Pagiging tao at Diyos.

64
  • Council of Necaea 325 A.D. Christ is divine.
  • Council of Constantinople 381 A.D. the Holy
    Spirit is divine.
  • Council of Ephesus 431 A.D. natural man is

  • Council of Chalcedon 451 A.D. Christ is human
    and divine.

65

  • 2 Corinto 317 Ang Panginoong binabanggit dito

THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH, THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS
(ANG BANAL NA IGLESIANG LAGANAP, ANG PAGKAKAISA
NG MGA BANAL)
II
74
Ang Iglesiang Cristiano ay institusyon sa bagong
tipan. Nagsimula ito noong Araw ng Pentecostes at
magwawakas sa ikalawang pagparito ng Panginoon.
75

kaliwanagan.

THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS
III
83
at Siyay walang kasalanan.
84
A. Two Aspects of Sin

85
A. Two Aspects of Sin
    (AV)

86
A. Two Aspects of Sin
  • 2. Actual Sin
  • Roma 323 Sapagkat ang lahat ay nagkasala at
walang sinumang karapat-dapat sa paningin ng
    Diyos.

87
B. Two ways of sinning
  • Doing what the law prohibits not doing what the
law commands. Ang nakakaalam ng mabuti na dapat
niyang gawin ngunit hindi ito ginagawa ay
    nagkakasala. (Santiago 417)

88
C. Forgiveness of Sins
  • Sin is rebellion against God, and therefore
forgiveness must come from Him. Forgiveness is
through Christ alone. This forgiveness comes when
a sinner puts faith in Christ as a savior. Jay E.
    Adams

THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY
IV
90
The Gospels do not explain the resurrection the
resurrection explains the Gospel. Belief in the
resurrection is not an appendage to the Christian
faith it is faith. John S. Whale
91
A. Our Bodily Resurrection is Guaranteed by the
Fact of Christs Resurrection
  • 1 Corinto 1514 At kung si Cristoy hindi
muling binuhay, walang kabuluhan an gaming
pangangaral at walang katuturan ang inyong
    pananampalataya.
  •
  • 1 Corinto 1520 Ang totoo, si Cristo ay muling
binuhay bilang katibayan na muling bubuhayin ang
    mga patay.

92
B. The Resurrection of the Body
  • 1 Corinto 1540a, 42 May katawang panlangit at
mayroon namang panlupa. Ganyan din sa muling
pagkabuhay. Ang katawang inilibing ay nabubulok,
ngunit di mabubulok kailanman ang katawang muling
    binuhay.

93
B. The Resurrection of the Body
  • The resurrection of the body is an essential
doctrine in scripture. It refers to Gods raising
of the body from the dead and reuniting it with
the persons soul and spirit, from which it was
separated during the intermediate state. Full

2 Timothy 215
  • Do your best to present yourself to God as one
approved, a worker who does not need to be
ashamed and who correctly handles the word of
    truth.

109
I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SCRIPTURE/BIBLE
110
  • The term Bibliology (from Greek biblos meaning
book) refers to the study of the nature of the
    Bible as revelation.
  • It often includes such topics as revelation,
    inspiration, inerrancy, canonicity, illumination,
    and interpretation.

111
REVELATION
  • We use the term revelation to translate the
Greek term ajpokavluyi" or apokalupsis, which
means to unveil or uncover. Biblically
speaking, revelation is the act and process
whereby God makes Himself known to men and
angels. This he has done through miracles,
    visions, dreams, theophanies, providential
control of history, conscience, Jesus Christ, and
    Scripture.

112
REVELATION
  • Theologians have spoken of general revelation
through nature (i.e., the created order),
    conscience, and providentially orchestrated
history and special or particular revelation
primarily in Christ and Scripture (Ps 191-6 Rom
    118-20 214-16 Acts 1724-34 John 114-18).
Thus general revelation is equally available to
all men at all times and while it alone cannot
save, it is nonetheless both essential and
    preparatory to special revelation.

113
INSPIRATION
  • Inspiration is the theological word, derived
from the Latin term spiro, used to refer to the
process whereby God superintended the human
authors of scripture so that what they wrote was
simultaneously their own words as well the Word
of God himself God breathed out his words
through the words (using the minds and
personalities) of his spokespeople. Thus, through
Spirit-inspired writings God has preserved a
historical/theological record of his words and
deeds and has given it to his covenant people as
a means of grace that they might trust him fully
and obey him implicitly. As a result of our
sinfulness and finiteness we stand in need of
such divine guidance and wisdom scripture was
    inspired to that end.

114
INSPIRATION
  • Inspiration, however, is not limited to
mechanical dictation (indeed, very little of it
can be said to be mechanical in any way), as we
might have, say, in the receiving of the Ten
Commandments (or the letters to the churches in
Revelation 2-3), but rather occurred in a variety
of situations involving the writers as whole
people (their minds, emotions, wills, etc.) in
their own particular life situations (linguistic,
    religious, political, economic, etc.).
  • The end product, however, was always Gods Word
to man through man (2 Tim 316 2 Pet 120-21)
and carries his full weight and authority.
Technically speaking, inspiration applies to the
    autographa (not copies or translations).

115
INSPIRATION
  • Some theologians have referred to the verbal
(extending to the actual words, not just
    concepts),
  • plenary (the entire Bible, not only those parts
that seem to speak directly to issues of faith
    and practice) inspiration of Scripture.
  • In our opinion, this is the view that (1) best
corresponds to the view of OT writers, the
prophets, Christ himself and his apostles, and
    (2) best represents the historic
position/understanding of the church on this
issue. Since the Enlightenment in France and
Germany (17th/18th centuries), however, it has
been fashionable to deny the verbal, plenary
inspiration of Scripture in light of apparent
    historical inaccuracies and philosophical
objections, particularly with the existence and
nature of God as well as the limitations of
language. But, while we can learn much from these
views, we may safely set aside their
    antisupernaturalistic prejudices as both
unfounded and contrary to the teaching of Jesus
who himself strongly upheld the complete
    trustworthiness of Scripture without reserve
    (e.g., Matt 517-20).

116
INNERANCY
  • Inerrancy, although not always properly defined,
is a logical corollary to inspiration and in no
way diminishes the human authorship of scripture.
If what the authors of Scripture penned was
indeed under the supernatural influence and
guidance of the Holy Spirit (as is properly
affirmed), then since God is true, what they
wrote and affirmed is in all ways true as well.
  • Thus inerrancy applies to the autographa and
Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic copies insofar as they
faithfully reproduce the autographa. The doctrine
rightly teaches that the scriptures are without
error in all that they affirm (i.e., properly
interpreted), whether they refer to geographical,
    historical, or theological issues.
  • Thus the scriptures are the final authority in
matters of faith and practice and take precedence
over tradition, culture, and creed. This doctrine
also allows for different literary styles, poor
grammar, approximations in numbers, etc. (Psalm
    119).

117
CANONICITY
  • The sixty-six books of scripture constitute the
Protestant canon in that they provide Gods rule
for faith and life. The process of canonicity
involves the churchs recognition of the divine
origin and authority of the sixty-six books of
scripture. She, as the redeemed community,
constituted of those who have genuine faith in
Jesus Christ, is qualified for this task. It is
important to note, however, that she did not
determine which books were canonical, but only
recognized those books which were canonical
    scripture is self-authenticating.

118
CANONICITY
  • In the case of the Old Testament, generally
speaking, she received it as the authoritative
Bible of her Lord and his apostles, i.e., the
prophetic message of God which was now fulfilled
    in and through Christ.

119
CANONICITY
  • In the case of the New Testament, the church, by
applying varying tests such as apostolicity (was
it written by an apostle or authenticated by an
apostle?), universality (was it widely read and
    accepted?), and character (sufficiently
    spiritual, directed at godliness, doctrinal
content in agreement with other apostles)
recognized which books were from the Lord and
which were not, though the process was by no
means finalized by the end of the first century.
In AD 367, in the 39th Easter Letter of
Athanasius, we find a list of the 27 books of the
NT we have today. This list was accepted by the
churches east of the Mediterranean while churches
in the west came to accept the same list some 30
years later, in AD 397, at the Council of
    Carthage.

120
CANONICITY
  • There are undoubtedly many reasons which prompted
early Christians to preserve the writings of the
apostles, but perhaps the passing away of the
apostles as well as the development of heresies
(e.g., Marcion) and doctrinal disputes, were two
of the most significant, and negatively viewed.
  • Also, the Diocletian persecution (AD 303-11), in
which Christians were tortured, their property
taken, and their sacred books destroyed by fire,
undoubtedly helped to move the church along in
its recognition of which books were sacred (i.e.,
inspired) and which were not. That is, there
arose the need to know which books to copy and
preserve in light of the possibility that the
state continue to try and destroy the faith.

121
CANONICITY
  • The extent of the canon has been in some question
among Protestants and Catholics since the
addition of the Apocrypha at the Council of Trent
    (AD 1545-63).
  • Anyone who has read these books will find them
spiritually encouraging, much the same as reading
great Christian literature, but they should not
be regarded as on par with the 66 books, a fact
which is recognized even by the Catholic Church
in its reference to them as deuterocanonical.

122
ILLUMINATION
  • Illumination refers to the work of the Spirit in
    the believer/believing community enabling
him/her/them to understand, welcome, and apply
inscripturated truth (cf. 1 Cor 29-14). For our
part, we are to follow sound methods of
interpretation in keeping with the nature of
Scripture and generally accepted principles for
    understanding written communication.
  • Further, we are, by faith in Christ, to put into
practice that which the Scripture teaches us,
lest we become blinded by our accumulated
    ignorance (James 121-22) and progressively
blurred in our comprehension of spiritual
realities. In this way illumination increases and
our grip on the truth strengthens (or perhaps its
grip on us!). See also the next section,
    entitled, Interpretation.

123
INTERPRETATION
  • If Illumination is the work of the Spirit to help
    believers understand and apply Scripture,
    interpretation, broadly conceived, is the
thought-through method we should follow in this
    endeavor. Interpretation involves, then, three
elements (1) coming to scripture humbly with a
knowledge of my presuppositions, traditions, and
cultural influences so as not to blunt or skew
the force of scripture (but rather to allow it to
leave its mark on me) (2) understanding what an
author meant when he said such and such, and (3)
understanding what he means, that is, how it
    applies to our lives today.

124
INTERPRETATION
  • Thus, in the first step we are interested in
gaining an awareness of how our culture,
tradition, and past acquaintance with Scripture
    have affected us.
  • In the second step we are interested in the
grammatical-historical meaning of a passage of
Scripture. In order to achieve this we study the
words of a text in their historical context, the
literary structure of a passage, its mood, and
the kind (genre) of literature it is.
  • Combined with this is the comparing of scripture
with scripture (e.g., interpreting the obscure by
the clear) and ultimately the teaching of the
Bible as a whole. In this way, and through the
illuminating work of the Spirit, the church comes
to grips with the meaning and abiding relevance
    of Scripture.

125
BIBLE
  • Presesnted by Ob. Edgardo P. Marquez

126
TEACHING OBJECTIVE
  • To understand the reasons why the Bible is the
Word of God and the foundation for the Christian
    life.

127
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
  • To understand the need that the Bible is the
    foundation for Christian life.
  • Each one should be able to mention the biblical
    structure and its characteristics.

128
BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONAL REFERENCE
  • All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
righteousness, so that the man of God may be
thoroughly equipped for every good work.
  • 2 Timothy 316-17

129
PURPOSE
  • It is important to recognize that as Christians
we have the need to share Christ to others and
take them to His feet. Many times we do not have
the foundation to tear down the mental and
spiritual arguments that the persons have because
we do not have the basic knowledge of the Word of
    God.
  • Each one of the truths that are in the scriptures
take us to a profound knowledge of God and it is
through this that we can be firm on Christ the
    rock.
  • Like those men who had to pass the same test, one
was sustained victoriously by the solid
foundation of the sacred scriptures and passed
the test. The other one did not sustain himself
because he had no foundation therefore his life
    ended in failure. (Matthew 724-27)

130
The reason why you need to know the Word is to
lead a life of success, fullness, and to fulfil
the purpose of God. You will receive peace,
trust, wisdom, correction and victory to confront
difficulties and adversities.
PURPOSE
131
DEVELOPMENT OF THE SUBJECT
  • Only in the Word of God can the believer find the
authority in order to be justified by faith.

132
WHAT IS THE BIBLE?
  • The word Bible comes from the Greek Biblos
which means books. It was considered that these
writings, on their own, made up a concrete and
defined group of works that were superior to any
    other literary works in existence.
  • The Bible is known as the Sacred Scriptures,
containing that which elevates it to the category
    of the book of excellence.
  • The New Illustrated Biblical Dictionary points
out the fact that the Bible is not merely a book
but a compound of many books.
  • The use of the term scripture illustrates an
important fact that although they were written
by a diversity of writers they present a
marvellous unity that reveals a logical order
that has not ceased for thousands of years.

133
The Bible can be defined as the sacred book that
is called the Word of God written by many
different authors under the revelation
