Title: What Is the Average Size of a German Shepherd?

1
What Is the Average Size of a German Shepherd?
The average size of a German Shepherd is highly
dependent on genetics, but if you have a
purebred GSD, it should fit within these
parameters. Adult German Shepherds are typically
24 to 26 inches tall and weigh 66 to 88 pounds.
Females are generally slightly smaller, measuring
between 22 and 24 inches and weighing between 49
and 71 pounds. This large size difference is
usually genetic. Purebred German Shepherds of
good bloodlines tend to be taller, but that's not
a guarantee.
Other Stages of Development of the German
Shepherd While your German Shepherd's size is an
important milestone in and of itself, it's not
the only thing to keep an eye on. Here we have
highlighted three more developmental stages to
consider when raising a German Shepherd.
2
The Tooth Did you know that your GERMAN SHEPHERD
will go through two pairs of bites throughout his
life? Your first teeth will appear in about 2 to
3 weeks, but it won't last long. At around 12
weeks they start to get their permanent teeth,
which means their baby teeth only last around 3
months. It's no wonder many owners don't realize
there's a difference between ultra-sharp puppy
teeth and adult biters.
Sexual Maturity If you have mixed-sex puppies in
the same household, you need to know when your
German Shepherds can reach sexual maturity. Most
German Shepherds reach some degree of sexual
maturity at 6 months. This is a big problem if
you have an untreated female puppy in your home.
Although your GSD may begin to show some sexual
activity at 6 months, they won't reach full
sexual maturity until 12 to 15 months. This is
when you start to notice typical male behavior,
even when you don't have a woman around. On the
other hand, females can experience their first
heat between 6 and 15 months. Females generally
take a little longer than males to reach sexual
maturity, but there is always a chance that they
will reach sexual maturity at 6 months. Having
intact male dogs in your home is a big deal.
3
Full Maturity Sexual maturity is not the same as
full maturity, nor is size. By the time your
German Shepherd turns 18 months old, he will no
longer be a puppy at heart, although he still has
some growth left. At 18 months you will have an
adult dog, which means that he will have the
instinctive temperament and behavior of a
canine. If you expect behavioral changes in
adulthood after your GSD hits 18 months, that's
not going to happen.
Final Thoughts When you have a growing German
Shepherd, it seems like he grows every day and
never stops growing. Although the growth may
take longer than expected, we can promise you
that it will slow down. But have you really had
a German Shepherd expecting it to be a small dog?
Your German Shepherd is growing up and you knew
it when you got him. You will definitely have a
big dog, it's only a matter of time!
