WE ARE SPECIAL
At Tuatara kids, we adopt and breath the
Tuakana-Teina way of learning. A traditional
Maori model of buddy system.

WHAT IS TUAKANA-TEINA?
The tuakana-teina buddy system entails a more
experienced tuakana helping, assisting, and
guiding a less experienced teina. In our
environment, where we value ako, we encourage
this method of learning. Tuakana refers to older
sibling or the able while teina refers to
younger sibling or the less- able.

Our localized curriculum and program are led by
the interests of our toddlers and created in
partnership with parents aspirations to help the
children realize their full potential through
strong Tuakana-Teina (Traditional Maori
Teachings) relationships.

  and kaiako, we embrace the sense of community.
• We acknowledge Te Whariki, the early childhood
  curriculum used in New Zealand, as it informs and
  inspires everything we do as teachers.
