When you are setting your table for dinner, it is
a routine situation, setting out the cutlery,
plates, glasses, and so on. However, when you are
planning the tables for your wedding reception,
it is an entirely different matter. Now you are
designing something that has to be both practical
and at the same time look sensational. In fact,
it is on such a different level that they have
now invented a name for it tablescaping.

Before you can decide on what sort of design you
want, and the colours, and so on, it is a good
idea to have a basic theme in mind. One good idea
is to base your design around the flowers that
will be in season at the time of your wedding.
Unless you have a limitless budget, flowers in
season are going to cost a good bit less than
those that are out of season and thus have to be
imported. Bluebells So, at this time of year,
for example, you could base your design around
bluebells. That is if you have access to them.
They can last for ages in water and give off a
sweet scent. And once you have them as a theme,
you have a colour scheme, so you can use blue as
the basis for the rest of the table
decorations. Whether you have square tables,
round ones, or rectangular ones set into long
lines, you will need tablecloths, and here you

can use white as a neutral base for your wedding
centrepieces. Alternatively, you can use a
patterned tablecloth with colours that match your
basic theme. It is a good idea to match the
napkins to the tablecloths which helps to make
the table feel cohesive. Flowers and candles are
a great idea for centrepieces, but if you have
long tables, dont make them too high. They will
get in the way of guests talking to each other
across the tables. However, if you have round
tables then it is OK to make the centrepieces
taller. Your wedding decorations for the venue
can include drapes in a variety of materials and
colours, and they can match the tablescaping or
they can stand out. Lighting is also important,
