What to avoid after knee replacement?
Knee replacement surgery also known as knee
arthroplasty is a complex process of replacing
the deteriorated knee joint, which can help to
relieve pain restore the function in severely
deceased knee joints. Knee replacement involves
cutting away the damaged bone and cartilage from
the thigh bone, shinbone and knee cap replacing
it with an artificial joint (prosthesis).
Taking proper precautions after the major knee
replacement surgery helps to ensure  good
recovery and better outcome of the surgery. 
Precautions after knee replacement- after the
knee replacement surgery the very first thing
that should be adjusted is to make adjustments to
the daily lifestyle while the knee heals. Some of
the changes might seem obvious but it can make a
different change in long term use of the knee.

1) Prolonged sitting- prolonged sitting after
knee replacement surgery can lead to increased
risk of developing blood clots, firstly in the
first two weeks after surgery long sitting
periods can hamper the drainage of fluid in the
lower leg and can lead to Swelling. It is advised
that in the first 10 to 15 days after the knee
replacement surgery avoid sitting for more than
45 to 60 minutes at single time, if prolonged
sitting is a part of treatment protocol always
prop your leg up on the chair to minimise
swelling.
2) Running and Jumping- the total amount of
force which is exerted on knee joint while
running and jumping is about three times higher
than normal walking, jumping and running which
can lead to exposure of higher forces on knee
joint. Performing activites that have heavy
involvement of running and jumping can lead to
cause damage of prosthesis after knee
replacement.

3) Excessive weigh bearing- It is highly
recommended that you should not perform any
weight-bearing exercises shortly after surgery
,it is very important to use Walker cultures and
other assistive devices while walking for
performing any heavy work. Avoid stairs, for few
days after surgery. 
4) Sport's that include high impact- avoid
participating in contact sports or sport's that
include sudden jerking or twisting of the knee.
These include- Soccer, football, Rugby, skiing,
basketball, hockey, gymnastics.

5) Activities that include high risk of
falling- After the knee replacement surgery
there is lack of range of motion and strength to
the joint and muscles surrounding them which can
lead to fall, any fall or trauma to knee can lead
to worsen the condition, always avoid exercises
and activities that include high risk of falling.

modify their environment like.
  • Adding rails in washroom and toilets for support
  • Using rubber mate in washrooms
  • Avoid slippery surfaces like mud, tiles etc.
