What Is Height-to-Width Ratio in Pallet and
Cantilever Racking Systems?
When it comes to industrial storage solutions,
the height-to-width ratio (also known as the
height-to-depth ratio) refers to the difference
between the height and width of the unit
itself. Ideally, the height of the unit should
be greater than the width of the base to
establish a stable foundation and should not
exceed a 61 ratio.

Racking Systems
  • Use a measuring tape to measure the height of the
    unit from the floor to the highest beam. This
    will give you an exact height. 
  • Next, you have to measure the width of the base.
    Measure from the exterior of the front column to
    the exterior of the back column and double check
    your measurements. 
  • After youre finished measuring and have the
    values of the height and width, divide the value
    of the height by the value of the width.

For instance, lets say a standard pallet rack
has a height of about 240 inches and the width is
about 40 inches. 240 divided by 40 equals exactly

standard industrial pallet racking system.

Racking Systems
  • To calculate the height-to-width ratio of
    cantilever racking systems, start by measuring
    the length of the columns from the floor to the
    highest beam. Make sure all of the columns are
    the same height. 
  • Next, you have to measure the distance or height
    between each beam.
  • Since the beam height can be adjusted for each
    load, its important to make sure theyre all
    even according to the type and weight of the
    load. 
  • Lastly, measure the length of each arm to ensure
    that theyre equal to the height between the
    beams. This will allow for more accurate and even
    weight distribution.
