Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Orthopedics
COVID-19 has impacted the day-to-day life of
people, businesses, manufacturers, and even the
healthcare industry. COVID-19 pandemic has also
affected the orthopedics field by which doctors
are not effectively concentrating on their
regular patients. The shortage of physicians and
support staff and even the ventilators, medicine,
and other equipment and devices are the major
concerns during the pandemic. Researchers have
identified an alarming lack of critical
orthopedics devices. Orthopedics and COVID-19
Patients Orthopedics providers are being
redeployed for treating COVID-19 patients. This
virus impacts the bone and joints of the patient,
and there is a necessity for essential training
to the orthopedics community to understand the
symptoms of this disease. Performing orthopedics
and trauma surgery has become a significant
challenge to orthopedic providers with the
non-availability of hospital support staff and
operation accommodations. Patients who are not
able to perform day-to-day activities feel pain
because of this coronavirus. There has been a
major impact on the manufacturing of orthopedic
tools, implants, instruments, and routine ongoing
research and development.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Orthopedics
Restrictions on Upcoming Orthopaedic Providers A
huge number of examinations of medical students
are postponed to limit the spread of coronavirus
infection. Classroom teaching is also postponed
in almost all medical colleges, and even regular
research is also impacted due to the public
health emergency declaration. Due to the rapid
spread of the COVID-19 virus, international
trades have gone down with significant economic
loss and non-availability of goods/raw material
in time. There is an interruption of the global
supply chain and increasing risk to the life of
healthcare workers. The healthcare industry is
immensely affected and facing many losses. Even
the RD mission has stopped to an extent.   The
life of patients with joint pains and
musculoskeletal disorders with bone is
compromised. In the current scenario, there is a
condition of proper health monitoring of disease
and precaution. There are a few solutions to
reduce the risks from COVID-19, which are as
follows
4
Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Orthopedics
  • Well protection of hospital staff
  • Well supports for complex cases
  • All orthopedics related meetings can be organized
online or virtually (e.g. audio and video call)
  • Alert system for the health-related issues of
    future
  • Enhancement of the experience and work efficiency
    of orthopedic surgeons
  • The patient has become more aware and take
    extensive precautions
  • There is a necessity of patient care at priority
and infection control procedures. Some precaution
requests to be undertaking, such as cover mouth,
close contact, washing of hands, etc.
  • This virus is impacting the daily practice of
orthopedic surgeons. Providers are forced to
cancel their professional visits in remote areas
and even in their regular clinics during this
    pandemic situation.
  • Those patients who require emergency treatment
and admission (e.g. acute infections, trauma, and
tumors, etc.) need to have at least an essential
hospital stay, to avoid the effect of this virus
on their systems. Most emergency or planned
orthopedics surgeries can be securely taken on at
a suitable time and can be postponed for a later
    period.
