Story Behind the Movie
  • While there exist many WWII era war movies and
some with exemplary story and cast, The story of
    G.I. Joe is special.
  • It was produced during the war with the intent of
telling an authentic story of infantrymen in
    combat.
  • Only the six main characters were played by
professional actors. Remaining were real soldiers.

5
  • Burgess Meredith, the professional actor
portraying the role of Ernie Pyle, was serving in
    the Army Air Corps.
  • He was requested by Ernie Pyle himself to play
the role and his discharge was specially
    arranged.
  • Great effort was taken to make it an accurate
depiction of American infantrymen at war.
  • The War Department loaned out infantrymen,
trucks, tanks, and guns for the movie

6
  • Unfortunately, Ernie Pyle was lost in action in
Shima, a small island west to Okinawa, while
covering the American invasion of Okinawa in
    April 1945.
  • He was buried on Shima and when Okinawa was
returned to Japanese control after the war, the
Ernie Pyle monument was one of only three
American memorials allowed to remain in place.
  • It made a couple of "ten best movies of the year"
lists and received four Academy Award nominations.
