1
Signs that Your Deck Needs Repair and a Makeover
  • Your deck is one of your top investments and
prized possession and should be regularly checked
and maintained for any flaws that might
compromise your safety. Some of the common deck
repair activities are replacing loose rails,
    removing rusted nails, removing broken
floorboards and putting in new ones, and
    retightening all screws.

2
  • While you might want to call in specialists for a
complete inspection and deck repair project, you
should periodically inspect the deck to verify
any issues that might affect its structural
    integrity.

3
Here are some signs that you should not ignore
about your deck and immediately call deck
repair specialists to set things right.
  •   Rotting wood support posts Current building
regulations stipulate that the support posts
should rest on concrete footings. But if your
deck is quite old, the posts might be resting
directly on the ground. Raw wood absorbs moisture
from the ground and tends to rot away. Hence,
take a careful look at the posts for signs of rot
every few months and whether deck repair is
    required.

4
  • Dropped footings Concrete footings do improve
the sturdiness of the deck but at times they
might crack and shift. Concrete is poured on soil
and when that shifts, the support posts are
affected too. Years of freeze/thaw cycles affect
the soil, making the concrete footings weak and
unstable if they are not poured deep enough
during deck construction. Check this aspect
    carefully.

5
  • Soil erosion around posts Soil erosion from
around the posts is a very common problem. It
occurs when snow melts or rainwater washes away
the soil that supports the deck posts and
footings. When the soil erodes, the lower level
of the deck is exposed which you can easily see.
When you find pools of water beneath your deck or
streams flowing down, call drainage systems and
deck repair specialists to set things right.

6
  • Cracked and splintered deck boards Small cracks
or a splintered board in one corner of the deck
should not be a cause for concern as replacing a
board will solve the issue. But when there are
signs of significant deterioration in most of the
deck, consider a full board replacement or a
major deck repair job. To avoid this situation,
undertake regular staining, painting, and sealing
to increase the lifespan of your deck.

7
  •  Loose railings A deck with loose railings and
wobbly steps is a serious safety issue. The deck
might not collapse but somebody might get injured
if they lean against the railings and it gives
way. Be quick to get any such issues resolved at
the earliest as the structural integrity of the
deck might be impacted if the deterioration
    spreads to other areas.

8
  • Decks that are not maintained regularly and
checked will not last. Whenever you have any
    doubts, contact well-established deck repair
agencies in your locality for an inspection and
    taking necessary action.
