What is Chemical Peel? And how does it work?

  • If youre new to skin peels, the words may sound
a bit scary and put you off before you even
    start.
  • But Im here to answer your questions and put
    your mind at ease.

3
  • So what exactly is a Chemical Peel or Skin Peel?
  • Chemical peels or skin peels as they are also
known, are designed to resurface the superficial
layer of the skin to promote the skins natural
    regeneration process, revealing healthier,
    fresher skin.
  • A bit like an exfoliant works on clearing away
dead skin to leave your skin clean and soft, a
chemical or skin peel works by burning the outer
layer of the skin to allow the skin to shed the
outer layers of damage and to regenerate new
healthy cells from underneath the skin.
  • Its name comes from the chemical reaction that is
caused on the surface of the skin that burns
    the old skin off.

4
  • Are Skin Peels safe?
  • In the last five years a lot of research has been
published on the side effects of harsh chemical
and skin peels and the increased risk of post
traumatic pigmentation (dark spots) as a response
to the trauma caused by the peel.
  • As an alternative to the traditional chemical or
skin peel, some peels have been developed to
create a peeling action by stimulating natural
cell renewal, through the active ingredients
    contained in them.
  • When this cell renewal occurs at a lower depth in
the skin, it will cause the skin to rapidly shed
its outer layer.  While you will get some light
peeling or flaking, the skin wont actually
    peel off in layers.

5
  • This is much safer for the skin because it wont
put the skin under any stress or trauma. If the
skin does suffer trauma through peeling, you can
    cause post traumatic pigmentation where
pigmentation occurs because the skin has been
damaged, and the darker pigment is stimulated as
a means of protection for the body.
  • How do I know if my skin peel is safe?
  • The best way to identify if the skin peel is safe
is to look for a therapist using PHAs (poly
hydroxy acids) and to ask the therapist if you
will have any physical skin peeling, ie will
your skin come off in layers, like sunburn.
  • This indicates a rapid burn and its this type
of trauma that can cause pigment as a response.

6
  • What sort of skin conditions does a chemical or
    skin peel treat?
  • They can improve problems such as fine lines,
sun damage, pigmentation, acne and scarring.
  • Are skin peels painful?
  • We think they shouldnt be. The deeper a peel is,
the more likely it is that you will experience
    pain.
  • eKSeption peels are based on PHAs which are
superficial yet effective, and there are usually
no side effects or pain, other than a slight
tingling or burning, and possibly a little
    redness.

7
  • Deeper peels can create what we call excessive
peeling, where the skin shed the damaged layer,
similar to when we get badly sunburnt. This is
not only painful and unsightly, it can create
more problems by triggering a response from the
melanocyte, which produces the darker pigment in
    the skin.
  • How are they applied?
  • Having a chemical peel is not much different to
having a regular facial. The skin peel solution
is usually a gel or liquid solution, which is
applied to the face with a brush. Its left on
the skin for a short period of time to do its
work, before being neutralised and rinsed off.
  • eKSeption peels are unique in that they also use
hyaluronic acid and peptides to fight the ageing
process and hydrate the skin, leaving the skin
plump and healthy, rather than burning off the
    outer layers.

8
  • Chemical Peel At Home vs in-clinic Skin Peels
  • As with most cosmetic treatments, trained
therapists in a salon or clinic can use much
stronger products than are available for home
    use.
  • If you are considering an in-salon skin peel or
if you are not located near a good clinic, you
can start with a chemical peel at home program to
    kick start the renewal process.
  • Ideally, you would commence a chemical peel at
home program two weeks prior to the salon
appointment. So when you get to your salon
treatment, you have already started the peeling
process and you will achieve much better results.

9
  • To start your chemical peel at home program, you
    will need four products.
  • Cleanser either all in one cleanse and
peel (all skins) or micellar water cleanse and
    peel (oily / combination skin)
  • monsoon mist tone and peel
  • PHA activator (which turns off the melanocyte to
    stop dark spots)
  • all day shield (SPF50 sun protection)
  • Even if you just want to do your peeling program
at home, these four products are the building
    blocks of beautiful new skin.

10
  • Add caviar peel every three days for 3-8 weeks
for a gentle, nourishing and hydrating at-home
    peel to improve skin radiance.

    they might benefit you?
