Virtualization
  • Virtualization is the technology which enables
the creation of a virtual version of
    applications, network resources, storage devices
and computer hardware platforms. It is the
process that makes it possible to create multiple
simulated environments from a single hardware. It
uses a software to install multiple OS (Operating
Systems) on a system and lowers IT expenses as
    well as augments efficiency.
  • Virtualization can be of various types, such as
    network virtualization, storage virtualization,
    application virtualization, server virtualization
and desktop virtualization. The content of this
    PPT focuses on desktop virtualization.
  • To digress, servers are used by web hosting
companies for the purpose of storing the files of
websites to keep websites up and running. Web
hosting companies use different types of servers,
such as dedicated, VPS etc. Terms such as Self
Managed Windows VPS, Self Managed Linux VPS,
Managed Windows VPS etc. refer to the various
types of servers that are used by web hosting
    service providers.

4
Desktop Virtualization
  • Desktop Virtualization refers to the technology
that enables simulation of workstation load by
users for the purpose of accessing a desktop from
a remotely or locally connected device. This
helps to segregate the desktop environment along
with its applications from the client device that
is used to access it. This type of virtualization
is an important element of workspaces that are
digital and it depends on application
    virtualization.
  • Desktop virtualization is a type of client-server
computing model. That is because the virtualized
desktop gets stored on a server that is
    centralized or remote. Virtual desktop
environments are made accessible to users on the
    network. Desktop virtualization enables remote
log in for accessing ones desktop from any
    location.

5
How does Desktop Virtualization Work?
  • Although there are various ways to attain desktop
    virtualization, two types of desktop
virtualization are the most important. These are
Remote Desktop Virtualization and Local Desktop
    Virtualization. This classification depends on
whether the OS (Operating System) instance is
remote or local. Each of these will be discussed
    in the next two slides.

  • Whoa! Thats a big number, arent you
    proud?

7
Remote Desktop Virtualization
  • Remote Desktop Virtualization functions in a
client/server computing environment. This type of
virtualization presents a common use of
virtualization and lets users run applications
and OS from a server that is inside a data
center. All user interactions in this type of
virtualization happen on a client device, such as
    a laptop, a smartphone etc.
  • Remote Desktop Virtualization enables IT
departments to exercise centralized control over
    desktops and applications.

8
Local Desktop Virtualization
  • In Local Desktop Virtualization, the OS runs on a
client device by using hardware virtualization.
All the processing and workloads in it take place
on local hardware. Such a virtualization is a
good option when a continuous network connection
is not required by users and when they can fulfil
application computing needs through local system
resources. Since processing happens locally, one
cant use this type of desktop virtualization for
the purpose of sharing virtual machines or
resources across a network to mobile devices or
    to thin clients.

9
Benefits of Desktop Virtualization
  • Desktop virtualization offers many benefits
depending on the deployment model that has been
chosen. Its major benefits are mentioned below,
    in no particular order.
  • Reduced IT costs
  • Reduced downtimes
  • Accelerated deployments
  • Better user experience
  • An increase in the productivity of employees
  • Simplified administration and resource management
  • Mobile access to apps
  • Remote work
  • Security

10
Disadvantages of Desktop Virtualization
  • The major drawbacks of desktop virtualization are
mentioned below. These are in no particular
    order.
  • Capital expenditure intensive
  • Doesnt reduce the number of computers that are
    required in the network
  • Users licenses for OS and applications need to
be bought, without any reduction in costs
  • Thin-clients are often more expensive than
    individual computers
  • Extra bandwidth needs to be handled by the
    network infrastructure
  • It is challenging to handle high-definition
    video/graphics
  • Certain vendor solutions work exclusively with
    their server virtualization counterparts
  • Desktop virtualization products support a limited
    number of OS
  • Display quality might suffer when there is
insufficient bandwidth on the remote end
