Home Network Security
  • Home network security refers to ensuring the
security of a network that interconnects devices
    (routers, computers, smartphones, and
Wi-Fi-enabled baby monitors and cameras) with
each other as well as with the available Internet
    connection within a home.

4
Website and Web Hosting
  • In the context of devices that are interconnected
with the Internet, it is essential to mention
websites and web hosting services before
proceeding ahead. That is because the Internet is
primarily used to browse numerous sites in a
    single day by various users.
  • A group of related web pages and content (data)
that is available for online browsing is referred
to as a website. It is located under a single
domain and can be identified by a common domain
    name.
  • Every website is made accessible online by a
certain web hosting service provider (also
referred to as a web host). Server space is
leased by this web host to store as well as make
available the files of a website. These web
hosting service providers also make available the
necessary services and the technologies that
deliver the files of a website to make it
    accessible for online viewing.
  • Terms such as the Best Cloud Hosting Company or
the Best Windows Hosting Company in India as
well as the Best Web Hosting Company in India
are used to refer to web hosting companies that
provide various types of web hosting services, as
per the requirement of different websites.

Home Network Securitys Misconceptions
  • Cyberattacks can take place in any network
irrespective of its size or it being used at home
or for business purpose. Any network connected to
the Internet automatically exposes itself to the
threats that exist in the cyberspace. Two of the
    most common misconceptions regarding home
    networks security are-Making multiple options
(home, reload etc.) available, to ensure
    convenience of Internet browsing
  • The devices being used are secure unaided
  • A home network is too small or insignificant to
    be at risk

Ways to Secure a Home Network
  • The ways to keep a home network secure are by
    updating software regularly, running updated
    versions of antivirus software, removing
    unnecessary services and software, using
passwords that are strong and unique, changing
default log-in passwords and usernames, adjusting
    factory-default configurations on software and
    hardware, installing network firewall, installing
    firewalls on networked devices, increasing
wireless security, regularly backing up data.
Each of these is discussed in more detail in the
    following slides.

8
Regular Software Updates
  • This is the easiest and the most effective way
to ensure the security of home networks and
systems. Updates not only add new features and
functionality but also contain critical patches
    and security fixes.

9
Running Updated Antivirus Software
  • This ensures automatic detection and removal
and/or quarantine of various types of malware. It
is highly recommended to run antivirus software
on all the Internet connected devices on a users
home network. It is important to enable automatic
virus definition updates to ensure protection to
the maximum extent against the latest threats
    that exist in the cyberspace.

10
Removing Unnecessary Services and Software
  • Those services and software that are unused,
create security vulnerabilities in a device. A
direct result of it, is an increase in the attack
surface of the home network. Hence, in order to
reduce the attack surface of the home network and
the devices, it is necessary to disable such
unused or unnecessary services and software. It
is recommended that a user searches for and
removes any service or software that isnt in use
    regularly.

11
Using Strong and Unique Passwords
  • Plug-ins Strong and unique passwords should be
chosen to secure the devices that are connected
to the Internet. Moreover, it is recommendable to
not use the same password for different accounts.

12
Changing Default Log-in Passwords and Usernames
  • Default administrator passwords are
pre-configured on many network devices. Such
credentials are not secure and hence need to be
changed to prevent cybercriminals from gaining
unauthorized access to confidential and sensitive
    information.

13
Adjusting Factory-default Configurations on
Software and Hardware
  • Such default configurations are not secure.
    Hence, cybercriminals may exploit this
vulnerability, if these are kept enabled after
    being installed.

14
Installing Network Firewall
  • It is highly advisable to install firewall to
keep any home network secure. A firewall serves
to block any malware from infecting a home
network as well as alerts the user when there is
any nefarious activity. It acts as a barrier
against internal threats. Often the firewall or
some of its features might be in a deactivated
condition as per the default settings. In order
to secure a home network the firewall needs to be
on and the settings need to be properly
    configured.

15
Installing Firewalls on Networked Devices
  • It is recommended to install a firewall on all
the devices that are connected to a users
network to ensure greater security. Such
firewalls not only inspect but also filter the
inbound and the outbound network traffic on
    Internet connected devices.

16
Increasing Wireless Security
  • This is an extremely important step to ensure the
    security of any home network.

17
Regular data backup
  • In order to ensure the safety of the important
information (data) on a device that is connected
to the Internet, regular backups of such data
need to be created and stored. Data backups are
essential and help restore the data in the
untoward incidence of data loss caused by its
corruption or theft. Either an external media or
    a cloud-based service or even a third-party
backup application can be used for this purpose.
In order to keep the backup information
confidential, it needs to be encrypted.

18
Conclusion
  • Any device that is connected to the Internet is
always vulnerable to security threats if there is
a lack of proper security measures. Hence, it is
extremely important to secure home networks and
systems adequately. Equipped with the information
regarding the main and the easiest ways to ensure
a home networks security, strengthening it
    becomes accomplishable without any challenge.
