Fireproof or Fire Resistant Which is The Safest
Safe?
2
  • If you have important items that you need to keep
safe from harm or theft, either at your home or
business, then you probably need a fireproof or
fire resistant safe. But what is the difference,
and which one do you need?
  • Fireproof safes versus fire resistant
  • Fireproof can be a misleading term, as given
enough time and enough heat, there are precious
few items that are 100 fireproof. However, fire
resistant safes, while being extremely secure,
    provide protection against fire.

3
  • Whether a safe is labelled as being fire
resistant or fireproof comes down to the
    marketing strategies employed by the
manufacturer, and there are no national standards
that they must adhere to or that their products
    can be compared to.
  • Research has shown that the average home fire in
the U.S. lasts for around 30 minutes before being
extinguished, and a fireproof safe can usually
keep its contents protected from the damaging
heat for that amount of time. When shopping for a
safe, its recommended that you try to find one
that has a Fire Rating time that is longer than
    the average fire extinguishing time.

4
  • If youre unsure about fire ratings, talk to your
local safe specialist who can guide you as to the
    best safe for your needs.
  • What to consider when buying a fire safe
  • For the most detailed and reliable information
about safes, it pays to speak to someone who
knows the most, such as your local locksmith.
These professionals often sell safes as well as
locks and other security systems, and can give
you the most up to date, nonbiased advice.
However, there are a few points that you should
familiarise yourself with if youre going to buy
    a fireproof safe

5
  • The material the safe is made from
  • Fireboard or gypsum board (the most commonly
choice), dry light fire protection (like
concrete) and ceramic thermal blankets (thermal
shock resistant with low heat storage capacity).
  • Fire rating and certification
  • In-house testing is not usually carried out by
the manufacturers of safes hence most safes are
not able to be given an official fire
certification label. That said, they are all
tested to maintain an internal temperature at or
    below 350 degrees.

6
  • For those manufacturers who do have their safes
tested for their resistance to fire, they use the
UL, or Underwriters Laboratories, an independent
organization who test and certify products for
    safety.
  • The proximity of the safes location to the local
    fire department
  • This is an important point to consider, since
rural fire response times can be much slower,
meaning that if your safe is only fire-resistant
for 30 minutes, its contents are likely to be
destroyed before the Fire Service can reach it
and dowse the flames. If you live in a rural
area, then the higher the fire rating, the better.

  • Fires can be terrifying and destructive, and
while human safety is paramount, keeping your
important and/or valuable items safe from the
ravages of fire, is important, too. Talk to your
local safe dealer and installer to get the best
    fireproof safe for your needs.
