Concept of Mass Media
  • Mass Communication is the process of
    disseminating message to a large number of
    audiences through some form of technology at a
    time. And the form of technology used to
    disseminate messages is the MASS MEDIA.
  • Thus Mass Media is the primary means of
    communication used to reach the vast majority of
    the general public. The general public typically
    relies on the mass media to provide information
    regarding political issues, social issues,
    entertainment, news or any thing in general.

Forms of Mass Media
  • Mass Media has evolved significantly over the
    time started from print media to electronic
    media to new age media it has come a long way
    because of its large number of reach and
    targeting of general people. The most common
    platforms for mass media are newspapers,
    magazines, radio, television, and the Internet.
    Broadly classifying the Mass Media can be divided
    into three broad categories-
  • PRINT MEDIA
  • ELECTRONIC MEDIA
  • NEW MEDIA

FUNCTIONS OF MASS MEDIA
  • Almost everyone gets his or her information about
    world, national, and local affairs from the mass
    media. It serves as the fourth pillar of
    democracy and this fact gives Mass Media
    important functions that includes-
  • TO INFORM
  • TO EDUCATE
  • TO ENTERTAIN
  • ACTS AS THE WATCHDOG OF THE SOCIETY
  • PERSUASION (to influence audience in variety of
    ways)
  • INTERPRETATION AND CORELATION (explanations of
    events and situations)
  • LINKAGE (bridging the gap between the different
    groups, which may not have direct connections)
  • Socialization (reflectors of society shape our
    behaviour, attitudes and beliefs)
