Granite is a common type of felsic intrusive
igneous or metamorphic rock primarily composed of
feldspar, quartz and lesser amount of dark
minerals. It has this coarse-grained like
structure thereby the name granite which in fact
comes from the Latin word granum meaning a
grain. Comprising almost a major portion of the
Earths crust, this rock is created by cooling
down of magma. The vast proportions of granite
are in pink, white and grey depending upon their
mineralogy. Granite stones are mined from many

more than 200 distinct shades of granite

India is the fifth-largest producer of granite in
the world and the reserves indicate there is more

metres of granite reserves are available in

Orrisa, Tamil Nadu are the states with the
majority of reserves followed by Bihar, Gujrat,
Rajasthan and West Bengal. The history of Granite
Mining dates back to the 11th century. Huge

architecture mainly in the Hindu temples adding
