Unraveling the dark side of facial
recognition
  • There was a time when man could only dream
about the kind of things that we have managed to
achieve today. All those sci-fi novels and
concepts are now a part and parcel of our
reality. Talking to machines, connecting with
people halfway across the world in minutes,
having biometric security systems- they are no
longer fantasies that we wonder and sigh about.
Thanks to technology, we have smartphones and
gadgets that can unlock with a single touch or
    face recognition.
  • Yes, the face recognition software has
become extremely popular among users. It offers
better protection and is custom made to your
requirements. And while all this sounds awesome,
there is a downside to AI and facial recognition
technology as well that no one talks about. Here
we have tried to unravel the dark side of facial
    recognition

Unraveling the dark side of facial recognition
  • What is facial recognition?
  • Facial recognition is software that reads
and analyses a persons facial features up-close
and then copies it into the system. This includes
recoding your eye color, contour, shape of the
eyebrows, bone structure, skin type and other
minute details that no one can copy or replicate.
Your face thus, becomes your biggest security
lock and password that no one can hack into.
    Other biometric security facilities like
fingerprint recognition and eye scans are also
some advance and effective hacks that have become
    popular among users.

  • Misuse of facial recognition
  • Facial recognition is a useful tool when
used in moderation and with your consent. Half
the time the user is not even aware of the kind
of data that is being collected about them and
the ways it can be used. There are several apps
and platforms that ask for permission to access
your contacts and camera. These apps usually take
in confidential information about the users and
can use or misuse it anyway they want. This is
why photo protection is so important these days.

  • Breach of identity
  • While replicating a persons face or other
biometric features is not easy, it is not an
impossible feat either. Hackers are becoming more
adept and capable to cloning peoples faces and
other features based on the data they collect
about them. Anyone can disguise themselves as
your impostor and access all your information.
Also with these apps, your identity and
activities can be tracked, monitored and accessed
    by almost anyone.
  • Abuse by law enforcement agencies
  • This might seem like something straight out
of a dystopian novel but, there are authorities
in the law enforcement departments who have
access to all your personal information. They can
now keep can eye on any citizen of the state, no
matter where they are or in what state.
Everything from your personal information to your
current location to your social media feed is now
    an open book.

  • Losing right to privacy
  • With organizations looking into your
everyday life and your social media activities,
your right to privacy is long lost. Even people
who are not very active on social media cannot
escape the horrors of technology. In this day and
age, no one is completely free from the clutches
of technology. Were all but a figure on
someones metric, our identities reduced to but a
stat on some graph in some corporate venture.
  • Unauthorized Spying by organizations
  • The big shots in the market like Google,
Facebook and Microsoft have absolute control over
your online activity and virtual identity.
Whatever you post, click, comment on or share is
systematically recorded in their databases. These
days even when youre not using social media,
these platforms are busy recording your
    activities.
  • This data is then sold to other
organizations and brands to help them market
their products better. One of the best ways to
protect facial recognition is to disable your
camera, turn off the internet and detach yourself
    from this madness.

  • The Bottom line
  • Any technology, no matter how amazing and
well-intended has a downside to it. That doesnt
mean that you will ignore all the good it offers
though. Facial recognition and AI have made our
lives easier and more accessible. However, it is
how we use it and how much we indulge in it that
makes all the difference here. For additional
