Introduction
  • In todays era of the world more vision problems
are due to the cataracts than any other eye
disease and also, with the aging population
    number of cataracts are increasing.
  • So, Prakash Netralaya , eye clinic in Pashan is
taking initiative to aware you about Cataract and
other eye diseases through this article.
  • Because of cataract part of lens turns to cloudy
    or opaque.
  • As light does not pass through it easily so
vision becomes obscure or blurry. The cloudier
the lens, the more worse the vision will be.

4
Types of Cataract
  • Congenital cataracts may be occurring at the time
of birth or shortly after, or at some time during
    childhood or infancy.
  • Age-related cataracts occur later in life and
they are the most common type. This article will
    focus on age-related cataracts.

5
Difference between Cataract Healthy Lens
6
Surgery
  • The only effective treatment is cataract surgery
    for severe cataracts.
  • The eye specialist will recommend surgery if the
    patient
  • Is having trouble or difficulty in looking after
    themselves or someone else
  • Finds driving difficult
  • Has difficulties for leaving the house

7
  • Finds it hard to recognize or see people's faces
  • Has problems or difficulties doing their job
  • Cannot watch or read television properly

8
What to Expect In Surgery?
9
Pre-operative assessment
  • Before surgery, the specialist will check the
    general health and patient's eyes.
  • The eye will be measured so that they can prepare
    artificial lens for replacement.

10
Before the operation
  • Eye drops will be given just before the
operation, to widen or dilate, the pupils.
  • Sometimes the eye drops will be having an
anesthetic contents, or the doctor may use local
anesthesia to inject into the tissue around the
    eye.
  • Cataract surgery is normally minimally invasive
or keyhole surgery and the patient will get
    discharged on the same day.

11
What Operation Incorporates ?
  • The operation incorporates removing the obscure
or cloudy lens from the eye and putting an
artificial, clear, plastic one in its place.
  • This is an intraocular lens or an intraocular
    implant,
  • This process is called as phaco-extracapsular
    extraction or phacoemulsification.

12
Process involved in Surgery
  • The eye surgeon insets a minute probe in to eye
by making tiny cut in the cornea.
  • The probe breaks the cloudy lens in to small
pieces and it uses ultrasound for doing that
    work.
  • After that, these are sucked out.
  • Then the artificial lens is fitted in to eye
    through the cut.

13
To be Continued...
  • The lens capsule works as a pocket, to hold the
    lens properly in place.
  • When it is inserted initially lens is folded, but
it unfolds when it is in position.
  • The whole procedure requires around 30 minutes.
  • Most patients will use an eye pad for protection
of eyes for a short while.
