Importance of Road Safety Rules in India
Road accidents are the number 1 killers on our
roads. Nearly 1.5 lakh people die on Indian
roads every year. That is equivalent to wiping
out the entire population of some
countries! These alarming figures are a result
of the combined inefficiencies of many factors
and utter disregard for human life and the
ignorance of road safety rules in India.
Inefficient traffic management system, faulty
road engineering, outdated, broken traffic
equipment, the rampant breaking of traffic
safety rules, and general apathy towards human
life are the fundamental reasons behind this
chaos on Indian roads.

What is the Importance of Road Safety Rules?
Provide us with the essential instructions and
information on the condition of the
roads.Provide us valuable inputs on good road
user behaviour. Help in the smooth flow of
traffic by providing relevant information on
traffic jams, speed limits on different kind of
roads, the presence of go-slow zones,
diversions etc. to name a few. Ensure discipline
on the roads by laying down rules and regulations
and penalising and punishing the deviants.

Safety Rules We Must Teach Our Children

• According to Indian law, a person should be a
  minimum of 18 years of age to get a valid
  driving licence.
• Do not use a phone when driving as it can cause a
  severe accident or injuries.
• Do not drink and drive. A person under the
  influence of alcohol is a menace to oneself and
  others on the road.
• Adhere to the traffic signs. Do not jump a red
  light and wait patiently for the signal to go
  green.
• Always overtake from the right side as India
  follows the right-hand drive. Look to your
  right, then left and then right again, when
  crossing the road.

IRTE Contribution in Spreading Awareness
One organisation that is committed to educating
the children on the importance of road safety
rules is IRTE (Institute of Road Safety
Education). IRTE has developed a road safety
programme to educate the kids on staying safe on
the roads through their existing school
curriculum.
