What is jaundice
  • Jaundice is not a disease but rather a sign
    that can be occur in many different disease.
    Jaundice is yellowish staining of the skin and
    sclerae (The whites of the eye S) that is cause
    by high levels in the blood of the chemical
    billirubin.

  • The color of the skin and sclerae vary
    depending of the level of billirubin. When the
    billirubin level is mildly elevated, they are
    yellowish. When the billirubin level is high
    they tend to be brown.

Causes of jaundice
  • Acute inflammation of the liver
  • Inflammation of the bile duct
  • Obstruction of the bile duct
  • Hemolytic anemia increase production of
    billirubin

Type of jaundice
  • There are three main types of jaundice
  • Hepatocellular Jaundice Occure as a result of
    liver disease or injury.
  • Hemolytic jaundice Occure as a result of
    hemolysis ( an accelerated breakdown of red blood
    cells) leading to an increase in production of
    billirubin.

  • 3. Obstructive jaundice Occure as a result
    of an obstructive in bile duct ( a system of
    tubes that carries bile from the gallbladder and
    small intestine) which prevents billirubin from
    leaving the liver jaundice, not to be Confused
    with infant jaundice is usually a sign of an
    underlying disorder.

Sign and symptoms
  • Yellow of skin and mucous membrane
  • The white of the eyes
  • Dark colored of urine
  • light colored stool
  • itching of the skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite

Diagnosis
  • The health care provide will perform a physical
    exam. This may reveal liver swelling
  • A billirubin blood test will be done. Other
    tests vary, but may include .
  • Abdominal CT scan.
  • Complete blood count to check for low blood
    count or anemia

Treatment
  • Treatment of jaundice typically require a

    increasing the amount of iron in blood

    anti- viral or steroid medication
  • Obstructive include jaundice may be treated via
    surgery to remove the obstructive
