Common Conditions
ForeskinProblems Management of a babys foreskin
often raises much anxiety. The foreskin is
initially adherent to the glans, or head.
UndescendedTestes In 3 of newborn boys, the
testes may not be felt to be in the scrotal sac.
By the time they are 1 year of age.
Hypospadias and penile abnormalities Hypospadias
is common, occurring in 1 in 350 male births. It
is an abnormality of the penis
Groin and scrotal swellings Groin and scrotal
swellings are most commonly due to hernias or
hydrocoeles, which are very common in babies

Marie-Klaire Farrugia MD MD(Res)
FRCSEd(Paed.Surg) is Consultant Paediatric
Urologist in Chelsea and Westminster
Hospital (CW) and Imperial College Hospitals,
specialising on all areas of kidney, bladder and
genital anomalies that babies are born with or
develop later in childhood. She is an Honorary
Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, as
well as an Associate Editor for the Journal of
Pediatric Urology, and is well-published in her
field. As Clinical Lead for Paediatric Surgery in
the North West London Network, Miss Farrugia is
responsible for the coordination of care of
paediatric surgical newborns and children across
the main west London hospitals.
