Title: IVF vs ICSI- Female First Hospital

1
IVF vs. ICSI
2
In vitro fertilization (IVF)
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process of
fertilization where an egg is combined with sperm
outside the body, in vitro ("in glass"). The
process involves monitoring and stimulating a
woman's ovulatory process, removing an ovum or
ova (egg or eggs) from the woman's ovaries and
letting sperm fertilize them in a liquid in a
laboratory. After the fertilized egg (zygote)
undergoes embryo culture for 26 days, it is
implanted in the same or another woman's uterus,
with the intention of establishing a successful
pregnancy.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
An intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is one
of the relatively new IVF programs. Because of
the age of this fertilization program, there are
many wild speculations among potential patients
as to who an ICSI is for and why it costs more
than a traditional IVF. Questions like What is
an intracytoplasmic sperm injection, really? and
What is the actual intracytoplasmic sperm
injection success rate? seem to arise with the
increasing frequency. So, to lay to rest all the
myths concerning the intracytoplasmic sperm
injection (ICSI), we have decided to investigate
how this procedure works and who could be the
ideal patient for an ICSI fertility program. In
addition, we will look into statistics that
demonstrate the number of clinical pregnancies
that resulted from an ICSI.

The Basic Difference between IVF and ICSI
IVF was the technique that was developed first
and ICSI is a variation of this technique. From
the viewpoint of a patient, not much changes with
reference to scans, superovulation injections,
blood tests , egg collection as well as the
actual embryo transfer. The only difference is
that which takes place in the lab. In the IVF
process, the sperm are left to fertilize the eggs
in a Petri dish. ICSI is different in that we
give the sperm the boost they require to get into
the egg- this is done with the use of a
micromanipulator.
