Some hormones raise blood glucose concentration
These are known as hyperglycaemic
(diabetogenic) hormones, and include
29
Some hormones decrease blood glucose concentration
These are known as hypoglycaemic
(antidiabetogenic) hormones

Insulin is the only
hypoglycaemic hormone

The most common cause of hyper-glycaemia is
diabetes mellitus
  • Diabetes mellitus may be caused by
  • Deficient secretion of insulin or
  • Decreased responsiveness to insulin

40
Hypoglycaemia is most frequently due to an
accidental overdose of antidiabetic drugs to a
diabetic patient
E M B - R C G
Less common causes are Addisons disease, severe
liver disease etc

After starting treatment of diabetes, blood
glucose measurements are required to monitor the
control of diabetes
However, post-glucose load measurement is not
required for monitoring purposes
Fasting blood glucose and 120-minute
post-prandial (post-meal) blood glucose are
measured for monitoring
