Hornbill Festival
The most unique states of India- Nagaland, Its
rich culture and tempting festivals are very
exclusive. The Hornbill Festival of Nagaland is
one of them. The festival is for the tribes of
Nagaland, which is also known as the festival of
festivals. The festival is celebrated with great
pomp, including multiple activities like
traditional dances, music, beauty pageant, etc.
This festival also contributes significantly to
the tourism of the state since travelers from all
over the world visit Nagaland to attend the
festival and take joy in knowing the splendid

celebrated?
The Hornbill Festival is celebrated once in a

Festivals. The celebrations of the fiesta
commence from 1st December and culminate on 10th
December every year. The festivities take place
in the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, located
around 12 km away from the capital city Kohima.
It starts at 9 a.m. every day.

The Hornbill festival is a 10-day long festival
connects all the tribes of Nagaland. The festival
begins with an invocation to the spiritual deity
through a tribal dance and is followed by the
inauguration of textile and handloom stalls,
competitions like pony-cart and horse-riding.
Travelers can explore into the diversified food,
handicrafts, songs, dances, and traditional
customs. The delightful Hornbill International
Rock Festival held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium
turns on the evening, tourists from all over the
country and abroad come to compete in this
competition. The event has also embraced of food
fairs where one can relish the traditional Naga
food and pork eating competition is also popular
due to being flocked by a lot of people which is
truly sumptuous.

  • Buy the entry tickets at the gate and clear the
    security check. Passes are to be bought
    individually for the everyday event.
  • Within 24 hours of foreign tourists arrival,
    they are required to register themselves with the
    Foreigners Registration Office.
  • It is advisable to make all the reservations in
    advance to make the most of the festival because
    it is popular among the tourists and receives a
    lot of people.

    can try bargaining at several souvenir shops and
    stalls.

How to reach the Hornbill Festival?
  • By Air Dimapur Airport is the nearest airport to
    reach Kohima, located at a distance of 74 km.
    Since Dimapur Airport does not operate
    internationally, foreigners will have to commute
    via Kolkata or Delhi Airport. At the Dimapur
    Airport taxi can be hired to reach the Hornbill
    Festival.
  • By Train Similarly, Due to its tough hilly
    location Kohima does not have its own railway
    station. Dimapur is the nearest railway station
    which shares connectivity with Guwahati and
    Kolkata.
  • By Road NH39 is a major highway connecting the
    major Northeastern states. Kohima is also
    accessible via Guwahati and Shillong.
