1. Lions Point
  • Surrounded with the lush green valley of Lonavala
    along with several small waterfalls and lakes,
    Lions Point boasts a mesmerizing view of the
    green valley. The most enchanting part of
    visiting picnic spot near Lonavala is the
    majestic view of sunset and sunrise. The spot is
    situated at a distance of 12 km from Lonavala
    railway station and can be reached through any
    transportation medium like a cab, bus or auto.

2. Karla Caves
  • Named amongst the most popular ancient rock-cut
    cave temples, Karla Caves are a complex of
    Buddhist temples near Lonavala. If youre in

    trips from Lonavala then Karla caves should be at
    the top of your list. This complex consists of 16
    rock-cut excavations that includes 8 chaitya
    griha that is the largest in India.

3. Lohagad Fort
  • Situated along the Sahyadri hills in Lonavala,
    Lohagad Fort is a very popular historical fort
    and picnic spot near Lonavala. Originally built
    by Guru Govind Singh in 1564 AD, this fort was
    used to serve as a prison. Later it was captured
    by Shivaji Maharaj and then recaptured by the
    Mughals in 1665 AD. The pathway towards the fort
    is in the shape of the tail of a scorpion and has
    four entrances named Maha Darwaja, Ganesh
    Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja.

4. Bhaja Caves

  • Built in the second century BC, Bhaja cave is a
    complex of 22 rock cut caves. In terms of style
    and architecture, the caves are quite similar to
    the Karla caves. The most notable part among all
    the parts is the chaitya griha that is cave 12
    which was earliest of its kind. Along with it,
    the complex comprises of a large apsidal hall and
    a monastery. The monastery has a huge rectangular
    hall along with a front pillared verandah.

  • Pawna Lake is an artificially created lake by the
    water of Pawna dam and is a popular spot for
    weekend trips from Lonavala. The lake boasts a
    scenic view of the lush green valley along with
    quiet waters of the lake. Be it weekend getaways
    or picnics or sightseeing, Pawna Lake can be your
    perfect visiting fit.

  • Boasting the majestic view of Rajmachi Fort and

    and is located at a walking distance from the
    Dukes Retreat. Also, Monkey Point, Lions Point,
    Sunset Point are nearby the spot.

  • Also known as Tiger Leap and Wagdari, Tigers
    Point is situated 650m above the sea level. The
    spot is popular because of the majestic view of
    the hills, waterfalls, green valley and lakes.
    The spot got its name because it resembles the
    shape of a leaping tiger. Near the spot, there is
    also a seasonal waterfall that works during the
    monsoon season only. Tigers Point serves a great
    picnic spot near Lonavala.

8. Kune Falls
  • Kune Falls is a three-tiered waterfall set
    against the stunning backdrop of the Sahyadri
    Mountains and is surrounded with lush green
    vegetation. The spot is situated in Kune village
    near Pune and is ideal for weekend trips from
    Lonavala. The falls is one of the favourite spots
    for both the locals as well as the tourists
    during the monsoon season, especially for
    activities like bathing and swimming. Kune Church
    is nearby the spot and works as the landmark to
    reach the Kune Falls.

  • Lonavala Lake is very eminent in near the city of
    Lonavala and is commonly known as the Monsoon
    lake because it is filled with water during the
    monsoon season only. The lake was built in 1876
    with river Indrayani as the primary source of
    water. The lake offers a splendid experience
    because of the scenic landscape around the lake
    and boating facilities. Other than boating,
    swimming can also be done in the lake. In case,
    you need to have a rejuvenating weekend, away
    from the city light, Lonavala Lake can be added
    on your must to visit list.

10. Karnala Bird Sanctuary
  • Located Panvel Taluka of Raigad district in
    Maharashtra, Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a popular
    sightseeing spot near both Lonavala and Mumbai.
    Established in 1968, this was the first of its
    kind. It is built below the Karnala Fort and
    occupies an area of 12.11 sq. km. The sanctuary
    consists of 150 species of native birds and 37
    species of migratory birds. Along with birds,
    this sanctuary is shelter to several animals like
    langurs, monkeys and wild boars. The Karnal Fort
    is also there in the protected area of the
    Karnala Bird Sanctuary that was built during the
    12th century. The forest has witnessed many
    rulers as well as invaders including the Devnagri
    Yadavas, Portuguese, Marathas as well as the
    Mughals. The spot is also popular for trekking.
    You can start the trek from the bottom of the
    hill and complete it within just an hour. You can
    also view sites like Rajmachi and Prabalgad from
    the fort area.

11. Rajmachi Fort

  • Rajmachi Fort is one of the most important
    trekking points in Lonavala that lies at an
    altitude of 2710 feet. The fort was built by
    Satavahanas and was later captured by Shivaji in
    1657 AD, along with several other nearby forts.
    As per the history, this fort was built to have
    control over the trade route between Mumbai and
    Pune. The fort was later captured by the Mughals
    and then again recaptured by the Marathas in 1705
    AD. But with the downfall of the Marathas, it was
    eventually captured by the Britishers. The fort
    includes two citadels, namely Shrivardhan and
    Manaranjan Forts. The complex of the fort has
    several ramparts, strong walls, huge getaways,
    water reservoirs, etc. The fort has also many
    waterfalls nearby along with a lush green view of
    forests. In the western side of the cave, there
    are some ancient Buddhist caves called Kondane
    caves, that was built around 200 BC. The caves
    comprised of ancient Buddhist architecture in the
    form of stupas, sculptures and vihara.

12. Bhushi Dam

  • Considered as one of the most alluring tourist
    attractions in Lonavala, Bhushi dam is splendid
    for weekend trips from Lonavala. The dam is
    located within the scenic hilly terrains between
    INS Shivaji and Lonavala. The dam was built
    around 1860 for serving as the source of water
    for steam engines of the Great Indian Peninsular
    Railway. During the monsoon, the dam overflows.
    Swimming is restricted in the Bhushi dam because
    of the unpredictable water flow. The dam is
    overcrowded during the weekends because of the
    alluring combination of water and the terrain.
    There is also a lake created by the Bhushi dam
    that is used by Tata for the generation of power.

13. Visapur Fort

  • Situated at an altitude of 1084 m above the sea
    level, Visapur Fort was built by Balaji
    Vishwanath during 1713-1720 AD. The fort was
    built for guarding the Lohagad Fort as it had an
    impressive fortification. Later the Britishers
    used this fort to bombard  the Lohagad Fort,
    making Marathas leave the fort and eventually
    acquiring it forcefully in 1818. The Visapur Fort
    is situated above the Lohagad Fort and is well
    known because of its strong and protective walls
    along with complex structure. Several temples,
    including a huge Hanuman temple, are scattered
    throughout the area. Although, the fort has just
    a few things left and the rest have been ruined.
    The fort offers a majestic view of planes and
    forest surrounding the fort.

14. Tung Fort
  • Also known as Kathingad Fort, Tung Fort is one of
    the well-known picnic spots near Lonavala. The
    word Kathin means difficult in Marathi that
    depicts the difficulties that come while trekking
    to the fort. The fort was built before 1600 AD by
    the rulers of Adil Shahi dynasty and was later
    captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort
    is conical in shape and has several strongly
    fortified walls and is surrounded by lush green
    valley. As per the history, the fort served as
    the watch-house for the Mulshi Valley and Maval
    region of Pawna. The fort also has steep climbs
    along with a narrow route on the verge of the
    mountains.
