Fig 5-1 Global Production Capacities of
Bioplastics (Thousand Tonnes), 2016-2024
  • Environmental Regulations and Awareness Towards
    Ecological Problems
  • In response to greater environmental awareness
    amongst consumers generally, no doubt
increasingly driven by heightened perceptions of
global warming, many companies are adopting
strategies to reduce their carbon footprint.
Amongst these Wal-Mart's plans to 'go green'
could conceivably have the greatest and most
    far-reaching impact on numerous markets,
including packaging in general and hence
    plastics.
  • In the Europe, the leading grocery retailers are
also progressing towards new policies regarding
packaging and waste. They have formed a group,
Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) that
sets out to reduce the amount of packaging and
    waste from supermarkets.
  • The concept of biopolymers was introduced in the
Western European countries over two decades ago
hence, the biopolymers market in the region is
    relatively mature. Furthermore, the legal
framework and strategy of governments of Western
European countries to provide many subsidies for
the use of biopolymers will impel this markets
    growth in the region.

  • Impact Analysis-
  • The commercialization of bio-plastics production
is imperative if the industry is to achieve
economies of scale and production efficiencies,
which can be translated into lower cost
    bio-plastic products for consumers and
    businesses.
  • Given the right conditions, in particular a
proper legislative and commercial framework that
would enable the development of bio-plastics
sector, the industry expects global production of
bioplastics to reach XX million tonnes.

GlaxoSmithKline announced to invest more than USD
350 million at three of its U.K. sites to boost
production of new respiratory therapies and
biologic medicines. GSK, will expand in Barnard
Castle in County Durham, England Montrose in
Angus, Scotland and Ware in Hertfordshire,
England BASF and Avantium are advancing their
efforts to develop the novel polymer polyethylene
furanoate (PEF). The partners have formed a joint
venture, Synvina, to build a plant at BASFs
complex in Antwerp, Belgium, for
furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a biobased
chemical used to make PEF. The EU-funded
PolyBioSkin project commenced work on the
development of biopolymers for high-demand
skin-contact applications. At the end of June
2017, the project consortium, comprising of 12
partners, including European Bioplastics (EUBP).

5.2. Market Restraints
  • High Cost of Biopolymers and Lack of Awareness
  • High cost of productions and limited availability
of land to produce raw material for biopolymers
are the major challenges faced by the biopolymer
    industry. First-generation feedstock, like corn
in the U.S. and sugar cane in other regions, is
established in terms of infrastructure necessary
to grow, collect and process. Next-generation
feedstocks in certain cases do not have the
supply and demand in place to support necessary
infrastructure and therefore do not have
consistent cost-effectiveness to make an impact
    in the market place.
  • While bioplastics are still a fraction of
traditional natural gas or petroleum derived
plastics, the marketplace is growing and
bioplastics are an option for brands around the
world. Bioplastics based on second and third
generation feedsources are still in the
    developmental stage.
  • Infrastructure for bioplastics is improving, but
it is linked to what comes first and the need to
build quantity and demand for the material. In
certain regions of the world and individual
states, progress on end-of-life (EOL) management
is being made due to government mandates to
    curtail landfill disposal.

  • Impact Analysis-
  • Goldstein Research has noted that costs are a
    major factor in developing bioplastics,
    particularly when petroleum-based sources are
comparatively less expensive. The current pricing
model and dynamics affect a wide range of issues,
from research and development, to capital
investment, to the difference in price in the end
products. Economies of scale and a lack of time
to amortize capital expenditures also work
    against the bioplastics industry.
  • Brand owners will be reluctant to adopt
    compostable bioplastics unless downstream
infrastructure is in place and not in selected
    cities or states, but nationwide

Fig 5-4 12 Telematics Trends and Technologies
  • While biopolymers currently represent XX percent
of the total plastics marketplace, it can
continue to grow if a number of factors align in
and out of the industry to spur the materials
    diversification, usage and EOL management.
  • Bioplastics are a growing, innovative industry
that offers solutions for a sustainable plastics
economy and that plays a key role in the
transformation to a bio-based circular economy.
Yet, despite these advantages, the data shows
that the overall growth of the global bioplastics
industry is currently being slowed down by the
low oil prices and a lack of political support
    for the bio-based economy.
  • As per Goldstein estimates, XX-XX of the food
products produced globally are wasted due to
deficient infrastructure and lack of food
    processing capabilities. Biodegradable Plastics
find applications in packaging which protects the
longevity and quality of food. This sector also
offers significant potential for growth leading
to increase in demand for Bio plastics and
    biopolymers.
  • A number of issues are pushing bioplastics
usage, most notably large brand owners moving to
    advance sustainability and green packaging
initiatives. Leadership from brand owners will
continue to be a major indicator for the future
growth of bioplasticslook no further than
Coca-Colas PlantBottle to see how the actions of
one company can profoundly change the landscape
    for the material.

Key Findings
Fig 6-1 Global Biopolymers Market Share, By
Product Type, 2016-2024
  • Bio-based, non-biodegradable plastics, such as
polyurethanes (PUR) and drop-in solutions, such
as bio-based PE and bio-based PET, are the main
drivers of this growth, with PUR making up around
XX and PET over XX of the global bioplastics
production capacities. More than XX of the
biopolymers production capacity worldwide in 2016
was bio-based, durable plastics. This share will
increase to almost XX in 2024.
  • Production capacities of biodegradable plastics,
such as PLA, PHA, and starch blends, are also
growing steadily from around XX million tonnes in
2016 to almost XX million tonnes in 2024. PHA
production will almost quadruple by 2024 compared
to 2016, due to a ramp-up of capacities in Asia
and the USA and the start-up of the first PHA
    plant in Europe.
  • In the near future, biobased commodity plastics,
with a total of around 1 million tonnes, will
make up the majority of production capacity in
2015. Biodegradable materials are slated for
substantial growth and are forecast to reach
about 700,000 tonnes a that time. hardware
revenues are expected to remain the single
    largest source of revenues globally.

  • The study forecasts that biopolymer production
capacity will increase to XX million tonnes in
2016, up from around XX million tonnes in 2015.
Production in the first half of 2017 was already
past XX million tonnes, with the XX million-tonne
mark to be passed before year end.
  • According to Goldstein Research forecasts
packaging remains the largest fields of
application for bioplastics with almost XX (XX
million tonnes) of the total biopolymers market
in 2016. The data also confirms a decisive
increase in the uptake of biopolymers materials
in many other sectors, including consumer goods
(XX percent, XX million tonnes) and applications
in the automotive and transport sector (XX
percent, XX million tonnes) and the construction
and building sector (XX percent, XX million
tonnes), where technical performance polymers are
    being used.
