Dental Plaque
  • Dental plaque is a sticky or a colorless film
which regularly produces in between and on the
surface of the teeth. It is a kind of biofilm
that is made up of microorganisms such as
    streptococcus mutans and other bacteria.This
condition may be developed on teeth above the gum
line, below the gum line on the roots of teeth
and along the gum line.If dental plaque
accumulates and is not extracted, it can harden
and turn into calculus or tartar.

3
What does it lead to?
  • After having a meal, the bacteria in plaque
extract acids which further targets the enamel
surfaces of teeth, especially above and below the
gum line and in between the teeth. Repeated acid
attacks increasingly erode the enamel, finally
causing tooth decay and cavities. When it is
placed under the gum line, the associated buildup
of bacteria and tartar can cause irritation and
inflammation of the gum tissue and can even lead
to the further development of gingivitis and gum
disease. Irritated and inflamed gums seem to be
red and may even bleed.Regular plaque
accumulation can contribute to structural rupture
of your teeth and the bone supporting the teeth
    and gums.

4
How can anyone extract Dental Plaque?
  • If your gums appear healthy with no inflammation
or redness then twice daily brushing and proper
daily flossing will tear the plaque that
naturally accumulates on your teeth. One can
brush with fluoride-based toothpaste can help to
extract dental plaque from the surfaces of your
teeth and floss or interdental cleaners will help
to remove it between your teeth. If one finds
that his gums are red and inflamed, or that they
bleed after he brushes his teeth, it is important
    that dentist should be visited.Early
periodontitis and gingivitis can be controlled by
regular professional teeth cleanings and more
diligent brushing and flossing at home.If your
dental professional finds an over production of
plaque and calculus under the gum line then a
procedure called root planning will be
    necessary.This non-surgical procedure is used
to extract plaque and calculus from around the
roots of teeth and in the gum pockets.

Prevention
  • The best way to avoid the buildup of dental
plaque is with regular brushing and flossing at
home. The best way to avoid a production of
calculus is through regular visits to your dental
    professional for check-ups and cleanings.Keep
    the following suggestions in mind
  • Avoid sugary and starchy snacks.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Refrain from using tobacco products.
  • Limit the number of snacks you eat throughout the
    day.
  • Brush your teeth 2 times a day using
    fluoride-based toothpaste.
