Rise of modern architecture
  • Modern architecture was conceived in the
19th century taking inspiration from the early
styles of Italian Renaissance, baroque and
Gothic. The architects of the modern day
announced that form should be the result of
function. The need for new type of building
    arouse post industrial revolution. The
    construction technologies changed during this
period with the rise in cities and densely packed
    neighborhoods.

3
The rise of apartments
  • As a result of the industrial revolution,
cities started to develop and the need for
housing was felt. Apartment buildings were
    constructed to accommodate the increasing
population. Steel frames made of reinforced
concrete were used to building tall structures.
Warehouses were also built to store machineries
and raw materials. With this came the
construction of bridges and dockyards to hold
heavy transport traffic. Such requirements leave
a lot of scope for design excellence for the
    Architects in Chennai.

Some of pioneers in the early 20th century
included
  • Otto Wagner and Joseph Hoffman from Austria
  • H O Berlage from Holland
  • Hands Poelzig and Peter Behrens from Germany

The first modern architectures was the Behren
turbo factory built in Berlin in the year 1909.
The international construction style was
indicated in the year 1918.

  • European architects were influential outside
their countries among them Corbusier was the
pioneer for nearly five decades. It was he who
advocated the structural frame to lift pillars.
He conceived flat roofs that were made use as
gardens. Each floor is planned according to the
need and all the load is borne by the structural
frame. This gives scope to plan the interior
    accommodation freely.

6
  • The best way to depict modern architecture
is to refer to skyscraper. In these structures
steel truss framework and I beam construction is
made use of. It carries the building weight and
cross wide space without the use of massive beams
or pillars. It adds strength and lightness to the
building. One such example is the Empire State
    Building in New York.
