What Are Displacement Ventilation System And
Passive Displacement Ventilation, And Their
Advantages?
2
Displacement Ventilation is a room air
distribution method, in which conditioned
external air is provided at minimal speed through
diffusers positioned close to the ground level
and dragged over the trapped zone, mostly at roof
height. In modern times, displacement ventilation
is used in various high-end properties, starting
from global level airports to research
laboratories, etc.
Its pretty much like the genuine displacement
ventilation systems providing chilled air through
air handling units, using air diffusers of low
induction. Diffusers used may vary by the desired
application. One may position the diffusers on a
wall. These are called the wall fixed diffusers
and are mostly positioned at the corners of the
room.
3
In certain occasions, these are fixed above the
ground level, like general standing position.
These are called the free-standing diffusers.
Irrespective of the case, cold air moves due to
the greater force generated, and propagates
within a narrow passage over the ground level,
meeting a comparatively greater speed prior
elevating because of the temperature transference
through sources of heat. Grabbing temperature
through the sources of heat, the chilled air gets
hotter and thin. Variation in density between the
chilled air and that of the hot air causes rising
movements. Rather than functioning as an explicit
system in a closed area, these systems can be
mated with other types of temperature exchange
mediums as well.
4
Passive Displacement Ventilation (Pdv) System
Passive displacement ventilation or PDV is a
creative dir distribution method that almost
equivalent with the displacement ventilation
system. This is so as in both occasions, air is
provided at the ground level and dragged from the
closed area at the top level. But, in case of
PDV, there remains no physical blowers are used
for propagating air inside the room.
5
These systems are entirely dependent upon the
methods of usual convection to propagate the cold
air to the confined place. Passive cooling system
generally are dependent upon the genuine approach
of heat transfer. Here there is no need for
physical fans for transferring the cold air to
the desired place. The PDV coil provides cool air
or temperature amount inside the closed place at
a very minimal speed.
The chilled air then propagates throughout the
zones unless it gets close to the sources of
heat. Getting close to the sources of heat, the
chilled air gets gradually lifted upon grabbing
temperature from the occupants. The hot air then
makes an upward movement towards the roof areas
where it gets bushed out from the space due to
the force from the hot air.

Benefits
One can enjoy various advantages through Passive
Displacement Ventilation systems in comparison
with the classic air handling units. First of
all, maintenance cost is pretty low in this case,
demanding no extra space or under the ground
ducting arrangement. It minimises the building
dead load greatly and also eliminates the
unwanted draft. These systems are vibration free
at the same time being noise free. Moreover,
these are user-friendly with the ability of easy
integration with interior design.
