1
Some Essential Facts about Heart Surgery The
Potential Reasons, Procedure Involved and
associated Risks
2
Understanding the procedure
3
  • Definition
  • Open heart surgery is performed to repair a fault
    or damage in the heart.
  • In the course of this procedure, the chest is cut
open and surgery is performed on the muscles
valves or arteries of the heart.

4
How is it performed ?
5
  • Cardiac surgeon grafts a healthy vein or
artery on the obstructed coronary heart artery.
As a result of which, the grafted artery allows
to bypass the blocked artery which in turn helps
to bring fresh blood from the heart to all the
    parts of the body.

6
The basic steps of the procedure
7
  • Step 1
  • After the patient is given general anesthesia and
put to rest, the surgeon makes an 8 to 10 inch
cut in the patient's chest. this cut goes
through the patient's breastbone to expose the
    heart.
  • Step 2
  • Once the heart can be seen, heart-to-lung bypass
machine is connected to the patient. This machine
clears the heart from blood or a while in order
to allow the surgeon to operate.

8
  • Step 3 Then, the heart surgeon make use of a
healthy vein or artery to pave a fresh path
around the blocked artery. Further, the surgeon
closes the breastbone with wire, leaving the wire
inside the body. Finally, the original incision
    is stitched up.

9
Who needs an open heart surgery
10
Open heart surgery is carried out on patients
suffering from
  • Congenital disease
  • Ischemic heart disease
  • Rheumatic heart disease
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Aneurysm of the blood vessels, and
    atherosclerosis.

11
Potential reasons for conducting an Open Heart
Surgery
12
Open Heart Surgery is conducted for a host of
reasons such as
  • 1. Repair or replace clogged heart valves
  • 2. Repair the heart's damaged or
    abnormally-functioning regions
  • 3. Position medical devices
  • 4. Substitute an impaired heart with a donated
    heart.

13
Associated risks
14
  • 1. Infection can be caused in the operated
region this risk is higher in patients dealing
    with diabetes and obesity.
  • 2. Chest pain, irregular heartbeat, fever,
    stroke, and neurological problems.
  • 3. Memory loss, blood loss, blood clot and
    pneumonia.
