  • The history of Indian notes dates back to the
    19th century, when Early Banknotes were issued by
    Bank of Bengal, Bank of Bombay and Bank of
    Madras.
  • British India notes were issued after the Paper
    Currency Act of 1861 came into effect and the
    British Government took over the responsibility
    of issuing banknotes.

  • Princely state issues consists of the old notes
    of India circulated by Hyderabad called as
    Osmania notes.
  • Apart from British India notes, Indo-Portuguese
    and Indo-French issues were also released in
    their respective colonies.

    issued after India gained independence on 15th
    August 1947.
