What is Anxiety
  • Anxiety is an unpleasant feeling of nervousness
and worry, which is often accompanied by
impulsive nervous behaviors. These feelings could
include overly anticipating or dreading upcoming
or hypothetical events, or in general just
relentlessly worrying about events that havent
even happened yet. It differs from fear in that
fear is a response to an immediate threat, while
anxiety generally involves the anticipation of a
future threat. Anxiety is sometimes generalized
as an overreaction to situations that most people
wouldnt subjectively find to be too dramatic.
  • Anxiety can seem appropriate when some people do
face unthinkable circumstances. It can even be
productive at times because it can serve as tool
to help drive someone to conquer a future threat.
    When an individual regularly experiences
prolonged episodes of extreme anxiety lasting up
to six months or more and interferes with their
everyday living though, they may suffer from an
anxiety disorder. The severity of some of these
cases can be debilitating if left untreated and
the symptoms of each individuals case must be
examined by a licensed physician to properly
assess the actual level of threat to the
individual in comparison to how the individual
    actually perceives the threat.

Types of Anxiety
  • Everyone experiences anxiety at some point or
another in their lives. While anxiety is a very
normal emotion that people experience when they
feeling the oncoming of a threat, anxiety
disorders are a different problem all together.
The difference between normal feelings of anxiety
and anxiety disorders usually lie in the severity
of symptoms. Anxiety can be a very unpleasant
feeling, but it usually subsides at some point.
Anxiety disorders can be very disruptive to ones
life and interfere with their day to day
lifestyle if left untreated. In some cases with
anxiety disorders, symptoms of anxiety can be so
extreme that they can be immobilizing and leave
the person incapable of carrying on with their
    daily obligations.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • This is the most common type of anxiety disorder.
It can be defined as a continuous state of
physical and/or mental tension and nervousness,
with the inability to break away from the
anxiety. People who suffer from GAD find
    themselves feeling constantly agitated, anxious
and stressed out. This constant stress tends to
be very disruptive to their daily lives. In cases
like this one, anxiety can occur for no reason
and leave the person feeling miserable and
incapable of properly dealing with everyday
    stressors.
  • This is a debilitating anxiety disorder that can
bring about bouts of anxiety so severe that
hospitalization may be required. This type of
anxiety disorder is characterized by panic
attacks, which are episodes of extreme anxiety
that can cause excessive sweating, tingling
sensations, numbness or weakness of body,
    dizziness, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat,
    digestive problems and depersonalization.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Specific Phobias
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • People sometimes attach feelings of intense and
irrational fear to other specific scenarios or
objects. Phobias are generally characterized by
disastrous thinking where the person believes
that the worst possible scenario could happen.
Such objects that could be subject to phobias
include spiders, snakes, blood or airplanes.
Often a person may try to avoid any and all
situations where the feared object could possibly
be present. Just like with social phobia, people
will engage in avoidance behaviors. They are
often incapable of controlling their fears and
experience restrictions to their normal daily
routine because their constant fear could
    interfere with it.

  • PTSD is an anxiety disorder that occurs after a
traumatic event. Those who suffer from PTSD
oftentimes must seek outside help. This is
because the residual effects of PTSD can be long
term and may even last for the remainder of ones
life if it is left untreated. In many cases,
patients with PTSD will often relive the
traumatic event mentally and physically and can
become disconnected with reality. Like panic
attacks, these episodes may have some triggers
that initiate them, but in some cases they may
    occur without any real warning.

Symptoms of Anxiety
  • Anxiety is a common human emotion that everybody
falls victim to at one point of another. Trying
to make the grade in school, workplace stressors,
financial insecurity or even just the fear of
heights are all examples of examples of anxiety.
Some of these healthy stressors drive people to
be more productive, whether it be to earn more
money or complete specific tasks by deadlines.
However, for some, feelings of anxiety can be so
intense and so frequent, that it instead
    interferes with their life.

Treatment Options
  • There is an abundance of treatment options that
are available for people who struggle with
anxiety. There are resources available online
that can help provide insight into where and how
a person with anxiety can get the help they need
and start to better understand their condition.
Patients suffering from chronic and severe
anxiety often require a comprehensive and
detailed assessment to determine the severity of
their condition and from there, can determine
proper treatment procedures to follow. In many
cases, anxiety treatment will include the use of
medication or therapy or some combination of the
    two.

Treatment Options
  • Medication
  • Therapy
  • There are several medications that are utilized
to help people who are struggling with an anxiety
disorder and struggle to carry through with their
day to day lives. These medications help to
reduce the occurrence of anxiety symptoms and
help to correct some physiological imbalances
that can occur as the result of anxiety
    disorders. Anxiety medications, normally referred
to as anti-anxiety medications, should only be
used under the supervision of a doctor and any
and all side effects that one may be experiencing
from using them should be reported to ensure that
the individual can make the appropriate
    adjustments.

  • While anti-anxiety medications do serve as a
valuable tool to help some of the physiological
imbalance that are caused by chronic and severe
anxiety, it is best utilized when used in
conjunction with proper therapy to help patients
take care of both the physiological and
psychological sides of their anxiety. This helps
them receive a comprehensive treatment for their
    condition.
