Advantages and Disadvantages of Motion Capture
  • Motion Capture is most widely used in
    entertainment, sports, medical applications and
    computer vision validation.
  • In some fields, it is referred to as motion
tracking, but in games and filmmaking, it is
    called matchmaking.
  • There are many advantages and disadvantages of
    motion capture.
  • Motion capture is very different from a
traditional computer animation of a 3D model.

5
Advantages of Motion Capture
  • 1. It gives immediate and real time results.
  • 2. It reduces the overall cost of key frame-based
    animation in the entertainment industry.
  • For example Hand Over.

6
  • 4. It allows many tests to be done with different
    styles or deliveries.
  • 5. It is capable of recreating complex movement
and realistic physical interactions in a
    physically accurate manner.
  • These movements and interactions may include
weight, secondary motions and exchange of forces.

7
  • 6. The amount of animation data that can be
produced within a given time is very large when
    compared to traditional animation techniques.
  • This contributes to both cost effectiveness and
    meeting production deadlines.
  • 7. It can be used with a third party and free
software, which makes it cost effective.

Disadvantages of Motion Capture
  • 1. It requires particular hardware and special
software program to produce and process data.
  • 2. The cost of software, equipment and personnel
required can potentially be prohibitive for the
    small productions.

10
  • 3. The capture system may have particular
requirements for the space it is operated in,
depending on the camera field of view or magnetic
    distortion.
  • 4. When problems occur, it is easier to reshoot
the scene rather than trying to manipulate the
    data.
  • Only a few systems allow real-time viewing of the
data to decide if they take needs to be redone.

11
  • 5. The first results are limited to what can be
performed within the capture volume without the
    extra editing of data.
  • 6. The movement that does not follow the laws of
    physics cannot be captured.

12
  • 7. Traditional animation techniques, such as the
added emphasis on anticipation and follow
through, secondary motion or manipulating the
shape of a character, as with squash and stretch
animation techniques (12 Principle of Animation).

13
  • 8. If the computer model has the different
proportions from the captured subject, artifacts
    may occur.
  • Example If a cartoon character has large,
over-sized hands, these may intersect the
character's body if the human performer is not
    careful with the physical motion.

Movies and Games Use Motion Capture
  • Games
  • Fife
  • Uncharted
  • The Last of Us
  • Devil May Cry
  • Movie
  • Avatar
  • The Hobbit
  • The Lord of the Rings
  • The Polar Express
  • Mars Needs Moms
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
