Title: Formulation Research and Development Services

1
What Is Pharmaceutical Formulation?
2
Pharmaceutical formulation is the process of
combining different chemical substances with the
active drug to form the final medicinal product
3
It is obtained after in-depth study of physical,
chemical, and mechanical properties of the drug
substance
4
What is the objective of drug formulation?
  • To produce a final medicinal product that is
stable and acceptable to the patient

5
Factors considered during pharmaceutical
formulations
  • Physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of
    drug substance
  • Polymorphism, solubility, pH, and particle size
    of drug
  • Inactive ingredients or excipients to be added
  • Effectiveness of the drug in phase I clinical
    trials
  • Results of drug stability studies

6
These factors are known through preformulation
studies
7
Types of formulations
  • Enteral formulations
  • Parenteral formulations
  • Topical formulations

8
Enteral Formulations
  • Available as capsules or tablets
  • Used for oral administration of the drug
  • Can provide rapid effect or sustained release
    from the digestive tract

9
Parenteral Formulations
  • Available in liquid or lyophilized form
  • Used for intravenous, intra-articular,
  • intramuscular, and subcutaneous
    administration.
  • Liquid form is preserved in ampoules, IV bags,
  • vials, and prefilled syringes in
    refrigerators
  • Lyophilized form is kept in dual chamber
    syringes,
  • cartridges, and vials in refrigerators

10
Topical Formulations
  • Available as creams, ointments, powders or
    inhaling formulas
  • Used for skin application or nasal administration

11
Effects of containers on formulations
  • After the drug is formulated, it is stored in
containers of plastic, glass, and metal
  • The effect of this storage in closed containers
    is observed for extended period
  • Any unwanted reaction between the formulation and
    container is noted

12
To know whether to formulate a drug as enteral,
parenteral or topical formulation
13
You need a formulation scientist!
14
What does a formulation scientist do?
  • Helps you in pharmaceutical pre-formulation
    studies
  • Analyzes the results of pre-formulation studies
  • Conducts pharmaceutical drug or formulation
    development services
  • Evaluates the finished medicinal product
