Introduction

• A propeller shaft connects the rear axle to the
  gearbox on the front-engined 2-wheel drive cars.
• At the very end of the propeller shaft, you can
  see a universal joint (UJ). It is used so that
  the rear axle can move up and down in comparison
  to the gearbox.
• A propeller shaft has few important components- a
  crossed shaped spider, with needle
  roller-bearings connected to the U-joints on 4
  arms by circlips.

• A U-joint is a part of a driveshaft that helps to
  transfer power from the transmission to the
  differential.
• Sadly, without a proper functioning u-joint, your
  vehicle will not be able to work properly.
• When the U-joint of your vehicle begins to fail,
  there will be indicators asking you to get them
  checked or replaced.

Symptoms of a Bad U-Joint
Clunk and Clanging
The clunk noise coming from the universal joint
is an indication that they have enough room to
allow the drive shaft to rotate slightly. But it
will come to a complete hault, once the power is
reversed. This situation can lead to further wear
of the U-joint, after having insufficient
lubrication in the u-joint bearing. Lubrication
or servicing will not cure the already done
damage to the u-joint but can surely extend the
life of it.

Vibrations

• Youll feel the vibrations as your vehicles
  speed increases when the propeller shaft is out
  of equilibrium due to faulty universal joints.
• Dont mistake this vibration with that of the
  wheel balance problem.
• The vibrations that are caused by wheel imbalance
  will have a consistency and steadiness when the
  vehicle is in motion.
• Whereas youll feel vibrations, both when
  accelerating and decelerating when there is a
  u-joint failure.

Squeaking Noise

• The u-joint bearings are greased thoroughly when
  they are at the factory before they are put on
  shelves.
• Unfortunately, they do not have grease fitting to
  further lubricate them after the vehicle is put
  into use.
• This lack of lubrication limits the service life
  of the U-joints.
