20 Activities Seniors Enjoy
2
There are many activities that your senior may
enjoy doing. Keeping them active is a great way
to help stop dementia, boost moods and increase
the quality of life. If you need some ideas for
your senior, then consider these suggestions
given by in-home caregivers from home care.
3
1. Go Out to Eat
Many seniors really enjoy going out to eat. It
does not need to be somewhere special as many
will enjoy a great hamburger or a fresh salad.
4
2. Visit the Local Senior Citizens Center
Most communities have an active senior citizens
center. This is a great place for the seniors to
make new friends. These centers often offer fun
games and nutritious meals that seniors can get
enrolled into without worrying about the
transportation as they can always hire a
compassionate respite caregiver to help them out..
5
3. Play Board Games
Even seniors who do not get around well, enjoy
playing board games. Bingo, checkers,
tick-tac-toe and dominoes are all games seniors
enjoy with family members especially
grandchildren.
6
4. Go Window Shopping
Many seniors feel that they are stuck at home for
long hours. Therefore, many love to go shopping
even if they do not need anything from the store.
7
5. Community Service
There are many non-profits that can benefit from
a seniors help. Some even have positions that
seniors can do from home like answering phones
and folding newsletters..
8
6. Dance
Many seniors love to dance even if it is just
around their living rooms. The great news is that
seniors who dance on a regular basis usually
sport better cardiovascular health.
9
7. Visit Friends
Seniors love staying up with the latest gossip
from their friends. Encourage them to do so by
providing a cell phone or teach them to use the
computer.
10
8. Listen to Music
Musical styles have definitely changed over a
seniors life. Provide them opportunity to
listen to their favorite style and watch their
moods brighten almost immediately.
11
9. Doing Chores
While you may be able to do a chore faster or
better than the senior, encourage them to help
with tasks around the house. This allows them to
feel independent and worthwhile.
12
10. Do a Craft
Crafts are a wonderful way to help a senior fill
long empty days. Many crafts can be done with
recycled supplies or choose those that cost very
little.
13
11. Play an Instrument
If the senior has played a musical instrument in
the past, then encourage them to start playing
again. If they have never played, then consider
instruments such as kazoos that can be easily
learned.
14
12. Travel
While the pace may need to be slower, many
seniors enjoy traveling. This is especially true
if they get to go spend a few days with their
grandchildren.
15
13. Watch Movies
Seniors often take pleasure in watching movies.
Although, their favorites are often movies from
the past, they many enjoy watching new movies
with wholesome family themes.
16
14. Read
While seniors were working and raising their
families, many seniors did not have time to read.
Take the senior to the library and help them pick
out a book or two to read. If their eyesight is
failing, do not forget audio books.
17
15. Go for a Walk
Even a walk to the end of the drive can brighten
seniors spirits. If mobility is an issue, then
consider using a wheelchair for a stroll around
the block.
18
16. Exercise
Encouraging your loved one to exercise often pays
huge dividends. They may discover they really
like to exercise while they are increasing their
range of motion, flexibility and cardiovascular
health.
19
17. Gardening
Seniors often love gardening. The fresh
vegetables that they raise can be used to
supplement their food supplies while beautiful
flowers can be used to brighten the home.
20
18. Grandchildrens Activities
While it may take some advance planning, most
seniors really love being part of their
grandchildrens activities. Those who do not have
grandchildren may still enjoy attending low-cost
activities at local schools.
21
19. Electronic Games
Do not save the Wii or Nintendo just for the
children as many seniors enjoy these activities
as well. There are even special games like
bowling that are designed with this age group
especially in mind.
22
20. Family
Many seniors love time spent with family even if
it is just a quiet night at home. Grab some old
photos and start an evening of storytelling fun.
